hello Im Cassie and i live with chronic pain due to arthritis in both feet, my right knee and my neck. I am searching for pain relief as I have chronic kidney disease and cannot take ibuprofen which worked well for me. Tylenol does not help. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Hello @cassie123, welcome to Mayo Connect! I'm glad you found us. Connect is a good place to ask questions and find out what others with similar health concerns have used for treatment. Have your doctors suggested anything the help with the pain in the feet? Is it just pain or do you also have numbness?

I think some people have found pain relief using topicals but I think it might depend on the type of pain and it's source. Hoping some other Connect members will join in the discussion and offer some suggestions that have worked for them.

I guess I just wonder what kind of doctors you've seen. I have been helped a lot by a pain specialist. He seems to know about more pain medication options than the others I see. I think that if he could, he'd have me on MM. His clinic made the decision not to prescribe it, which is frustrating since it's legal here in Oregon.

I've learned that there are many pain treatment options. The process of finding the right one, unfortunately, can take time.

Jim

My clinic tried to force me to go back on MM. In Oregon.

dear cassie123 the doctors should at least let us try the mm and if it does not do the job then revert back to the addictive pills or whatever.

I totally agree peach14144....i know a lot of people mm works for their pain and nausea.

I agree...and it also depends on which drs the insurance co. allows you to see...

the pain in my feet and knees are from osteoarthritis....no numbness. dr. said i need a knee replacement but they want to wait another 5 years! Im 55 and I would like quality of life now not later.

Peach, couldn't agree with you more. We really have to be our own advocates, which is difficult to do when one's struggling with PAIN. But I am truly sick of medical "professionals" not giving us choices or not telling us about choices. I flee from those folks.

@cassie123 Cassie, I read a couple of years ago that the latest thinking is not to wait until you are desperate but if it's eventually going to need to be replaced do it asap. That way when you have the surgery you are in better shape for recovery. I had one knee replaced when the thinking was to wait, and I waited until I was in pain 24/7. I am having the other replaced in October and this time I have strengthened my legs and can get around pretty well, very Indiscernible limp, but on stairs or on uneven terrain I have a lot of trouble.
