Cassie, how bad is your pain? My thinking is you are only 55 and they say a knee replacement is only good for 20 yrs at most. The Doctor wants to wait until you are older so they don't have to do another one later. I am of the thinking that you would have to be in awful pain to go through the surgery. It is not a piece of cake but very painful. Then again you don't want to wait until you are elderly and the recovery is a little longer. But at age 60 if you can wait that long is a good age. I was 70 when I had mine and recovered well but 4 months post op I am still in pain. Not much but it can take up to a year for a full recovery. But, back to the question, how bad is the pain? Is it interfering with walking. I am Marield65. Nice meeting you and let me know how you are doing.

Cassie @cassie123, it seems that the decision of when to have a knee replacement would be up to the owner of the knee. Second opinion time?

Jim

Cassie @cassie123, my brother had to have both knees replaced when he was in his 50s. For the first one, he walked and exercised religiously, doing the things that are prescribed for post surgery. He had a very good recovery. The second one, he wasn't as obsessive pre-surgery, and recovery was longer and more painful. He was bone on bone in both knees, a result of being a plumber. I recommend doing what you think is best for you, taking into consideration all that you read and are told.

Jim

Only giving my opinion. Not meant to persuade. Marield65

Cassie decision is definitely up to you. I was only putting in my 2 cents. Coming from a 72 year young woman. I wish you the best in whatever decision you make. Marield65

Hi Sharon, my pain mgmt doc referred this treatment as last resort. Asked all around for opinions and was not happy with their replies. I have all the spinal issues, stenois and more as well as Fibromyalgia. Let me know down the line how this is working for you. signed

@marield65 I thought the current knees lasted longer. That's a good question for me to ask my ortho.
JK

To content, I never asked my Doctor that. He is a great surgeon but not very talkative and I really never thought of it. That would be great if that were the case. My next appointment will be in October, I will ask him. Thanks for the info. Marield65

Chronic pain is from Satan. It has caused me to lose my mind. I have been on opiates for 5 years which has erased my life.

@charlton

I agree that chronic pain and opiates aren't the way anyone should have to live. Beside the pain specialist, pcp, neurologist, ENT, speech therapist and hematologist, I think the person who's helping me the most right now is the therapist I've been seeing for 5 months. 18 months passed after the last one left before the hospital found a new one, and I was back in depression, and I wanted to end my life. The past few weeks have been hard because of some health issues, but my session with the therapist today really made a difference in how I felt. There's a real benefit in having someone to talk with about what I'm going through.
