Does surgery work for Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR)?
Since December 13, 2016. My symptoms started with a soar throat, soar inflamed taste buds on the tip of my tongue and inflamed salivary glands on my soft palate. My tongue, throat and soft palate had a painful burning sensation that was on and off. My General practitioner referred me to an Ear Nose throat specialist who referred me to an oral surgeon who referred me to an oral pathologist for burning mouth syndrome. After wasting 3 months of running around with these Dr's and being tested for oral thrush, hsv tests, vitamin deficiency tests, auto immune deficiency tests, cultural bacteria tests all which came back normal. I decided to go for a second opinion with another E.N.T. specialist who performed a camera scope and diagnosed me with acid in my throat. I was put on Dexilant and noticed the pain dissipate almost immediately only problem was I couldn't tolerate the medication. I was then put on Tecta and referred to a G. I. My general Practitioner did some blood work for h pylori and I tested positive. I started to develop tinitus in my left ear. I had a gastroscopy where they found a 2 cm Hiatel Hernial and my lower sphincter was weak. Thats when I was told I have a mild case of gerd, but I don't suffer from any heart burn. I was put on triple dose of antibiotics for h pylori and continued with the Tecta, domperadone and sucrolafate. I'm getting a little relief from the PPI and meds but I still suffer from bitter reflux taste and burning pain in my throat, soft Palate, the tip of my tongue and dry mouth that comes and goes. I'm in the process of having a 24 hr ph level test done. The G. I. I was seeing says my esophagus biopsy tested clean and he doesn't believe what is happening in my oral cavity is related to my gut. He stated in order for acid to travel to the throat it has to travel through the esophagus and the esophagus tested clean. Thus he can't help me anymore. I'm so confused my ENT says I have acid in my throat and the G.I. doesn't agree.

You can many times find alkaline water at Dollar Tree. It does seem to help. Cindy
I have severe Gerd so what do you recommend then!
I was told by ENT using endoscopy that I had LPR; prescribed ppi’s that worsened the condition.
Was then tested for SIBO (simple breath test) and tested positive. I would suggest getting tested for SIBO before doing anything else. Both LPR andSIBO are gut health issues, but the treatment for both varies significantly.
I have osteoporosis and had started drinking a bottled water that has a ph of 8. I noticed my reflux drastically decreased with just this simple action.

1 ReactionIt helps me too. It has to have a ph of 8.5-9. to work.
Per Mayo, it is also good for people with bone diseases, although, they say more research is needed.
For LPR take Gaviscon Plus from Amazon. It has algae and anise. It covers your throat and chest so acid does not damage them..
Do you also have a lot of mucus in your chest and throat? I do while sleeping at nighr. Nothing helps i have to stop eating and drinking water five hours before going to bed. I have a wedge too, but does not help with mucua.
I take Gaviscon Cherry, not Peppermint, and try pH balance water. pH has to be more than 8.5:to work. Try white vinegar in water or take vinegar pills. I don't recommend baking soda for daily use, but you can try that sometimes. Try these one at a time to see which works. Diet, acidic foods, sauces, coffee, gassy foods, spices, fried and oily food, bread are all by for Gerd . don't eat anything or drink anything 4-5 hours before going to bed. sleep on a wedge, 8" high if you are not sleeping on one. sleep on your left side and put a pillow behind your back. PPIs and Pepcid never helped. Wear loose clothing, and don't bend over 2-3 hrs after you eat. Lose lots of weight...I was 156, now I am 126, lost this weight within 4 years. No sweets or junk food.

1 ReactionWow. So many things to try and to eliminate. I guess you have to keep at that for a while to see any results. I heard of gaviscon from Dr Jamie Koufman. She says that’s better than ppis.
Omg! I have SIBO and gerd, and NEVER connected the two! And no one ever mentioned it! I’m down to 20mg famotidine twice a day, and totally forgot about alkaline foods and water.
Haven’t had a SIBO issue for 4 years, but recently a new little one started. At least I know what it is now-took two years last time to get a diagnosis.
I attribute this attack to eating-this summer we had the best watermelon vendors around the corner, and ate it every day…baaad thing for SIBO, I forgot…
Anyway, I take a pre and pro biotic, and will now start adding a bit of baking soda to my water.
Thank you!!!
