Is there a good alternative to statins? I was put on Rasusvastatin 10

Posted by cfbauer @cfbauer, Aug 26, 2023

I'm looking for an alternative to statins. I had an episode of dizziness ( a potential side effect) and fell 10 feet onto my head. I was fortunate to not break my neck. The result was a concussion and severe neck sprain with a lot of pain. I work around macchinery and at heights.

Thank you so much!!! I think I’m going to try the supplement mentioned in this thread, but if it doesn’t work, my next will be Zetia based on your information. One thing zetia doesn’t do is reduce the plaque so you are still at the same (?) risk as it only lowers cholesterol. Do you know anything about this? All information is greatly appreciated!

Zetia had been previously shown to reduce cholesterol by about 15-20 percent, which makes it a better cholesterol-lowering medication than traditional drugs like Zocor. However, Zetia had not been shown to prevent the buildup of fatty plaques on the insides or arteries that commonly lead to heart attacks and strokes.

As the devil's advocate here, I can say that I have been on a number of heart meds since my heart attack and triple bypass in December 2021, as one of the ways to avoid more of that. Avorstatin has had minimal side effects - a bit of nausea when I first started taking it but nothing else. So sometimes the drugs don't have a nasty effect and in fact do something good. Doctors prescribe them because there are randomized control trials that show their relative efficacy, not something one can always say about supplements and naturopathic 'medicines', yoga etc.

Thank you so much. “devil’s Advocate” is a good thing to be. It’s very helpful. I have tried several statins resulting in severe side effects. I just can’t take them. With most drugs, I tend to have every severe side effects only 10% of the people have. That’s one reason I am afraid of taking new drugs. Especially that have liver damage, neck swelling, etc as a side effect. I took an antibiotic once snd ended up in the ER clinging to life. When I get vaccines I stay for at least an hour to check for side effects. I’m going to try the supplement. If it works, then woohoo. If not, back to the drawing board. BTW, I am doing just about everything recommended as to nutrition and life style.

You are welcome. I think your plan sounds good. I will report back when I have my next blood draw next month....to see if the Cholestrice has benefitted me.

PLEASE DO! I already ordered it. I’ll have it tomorrow.

PS. My doctor said he checked it out and it doesn’t work and that supplements aren’t as good as drugs. I said, “I’m going to give it a try, what the heck.”

I am NOT going to take statins because of a severe reaction I had. I would rather die from the big C (coronary) than constantly worrying about a statin side effect, which in my case could have resulted in death or quadripelgia. My wife had a reaction to lipitor. She had severe chest pain which radiated to her back and mimicked a heart attack and resulted in a trip to the ER. I am currently taking a natural product, "Cholestrice", to control LDL and cholesterol. My cardiologist is on board with this. I'll have a blood draw after day 30 to see what the results are. He is a DO and has seen positive results. This product contains red yeast rice, plant sterols, pantethine, and policosanol.

Thank you for your post. I have the same concerns about statins. I’m not sure what I should be doing as I have lupus that puts me in the category that gets calcification. My calcium was 121 , my blood pressure normal , cholesterol and ldl in normal limits . I’m a 67 year old female 175 cm tall and 82 kg and don’t smoke. My daughter is in early 30’s and has always had high cholesterol as she seems to make more. Her cardiologist is happy for her not to go on a statin ( her GP put her on crestor and she was in so much pain all over her body that she had to stop taking it.
I had a DNA blood test for medications that work or have adverse or a reduced or no effect. and none of the statins came up as being effective . I think I will have to rely on diet and exercise and try natural things . I take K2 with Vitamin D . I may have a perfusion test in November. I don’t have any heart pains but a few cramps a couple of years back then nothing. I had the calcium score test done because a nurse told me she did with a zero result.
I have general anxiety and depression and now I wish I never got the test done as there doesn’t seem to be much I can do about it and now I have it hanging over my head knowing that it just keeps increasing anyway. I would have enjoyed life more living in ignorance. Not sure how others feel as perhaps it is a test better for people that smoke , are over weight and have high blood pressure as it could prompt them to alter bad habits.

I have taken atorvastatin for several years with zero side effects - other than significantly lowered LDL - 40-45. Vascepa with 45-50 triglycerides.

Poppy - what DNA test and what does it determine? Other than weight as an issue, what are you lipid numbers? Does your daughter also have weight issue? What are her doecific lipid numbers?

The DNA test tells you whether certain medications will work for you.

The DNA test is called PGX multi - it’s a personalised medication Report. It shows which medications you will have an adverse reaction, no reaction or an altered reaction. I have very little that actually works for me anc that is why I had the blood test.
Report summary identifies which of the patients listed medications have pharmacogenomic information elevate to the genes tested, with an indication of the clinical importance of this information( ie Major, Minor or Usual prescribing considerations) Genetic test results overview- genotype result for the nine genes test( ie six genes encoding CYP 450 metabolising enzymes relevant to a large number of medications, VKORC1 which relates to statin induced myopathy and OPRM1 which relates to morphine sensitivity).Medications of interest- details of interaction between the patients genetic results and their medication, based on the current scientific literature as well as clinical recommendations, many sourced from peer reviewed, published guidelines
Potential drug interactions- i dentifrices which of the patients listed medications can significantly inhibit or induceCYp enzymes, as they may modify the genotype- prescribed enzyme function
My DNA test was done by Genomic Diagnostics as requested by my specialist.
Statins will help if your levels are high as it helps make plaque more stable so you calcium score will go up when you are taking statins.
My cholesterol, lipids etc all in normal range. I’m 5 feet 10 “ tall with strong bones and muscles so I could lose 4-5 kegs but ultimately your calcium score will continue to rise once it is there but could help in not letting pieces break off and cause a stroke or heart attack but the arteries will continue to narrow with calcification over the years or decades.
My daughter is skinny , vegetarian and her cholesterol has been high since she was 14 . Her heart specialist doesn’t want her on statins but does want her to start body identical HRT when she is perimenapausal and stay on for the rest of her life.

My blood sugar number went up. On the Repatha insert anincreased blood sugar level is listed as a side effect. My endocrinologist says this is not caused by the Repatha. He said he was involved in the research of the drug . So my blood sugar is elevated but remains stable at what is considered pre-diabetes . He says it is genetic so have my mother to thank.
So, assuming the blood sugar is not caused by the Repatha, no side effects.

If my blood sugar numbers go up on Repatha I plan to go to Wegovy. Wegovy is now approved by the FDA for reducing blood sugar, reducing cholesterol and it helps with weight loss.
