Post-Covid dizziness/off-balance, as most troubling symptom

Posted by kirstenk2003 @kirstenk2003, Mar 30, 2022

I contracted Covid in December 2021 and am currently dealing with persistent dizziness (off balance, sometimes feels like swaying, rocking, spinning, or a pull to one side). My other most bothersome symptoms are ear ringing, headaches (pressure in the head), feelings of pressure change in my ears, trouble multitasking or thinking, along with developing anxiety/ depression and some elevated heart rate and blood pressure.

Dizziness was not a symptom of my initial infection. I developed dizziness (not BPPV) around January 15th. I saw a physical therapist who determined I had Vestibular Hypofunction and I began vestibular therapy. It seemed to be working and I even returned to my office job for about 3 weeks, restricted hours. Two weeks ago I began feeling worse again. My physical therapist believes my initial issue has improved - so he doesn't know what's causing my current onset of symptoms. I started an antihistamine to combat any allergy related ear fluid, along with an anxiety medication to try and improve my blood pressure and heart rate.

I'm going to see an ENT next, and hope that I haven't waited too long to try other remedies (if there are any). Has anyone else experienced this overwhelming dizziness and had positive results with treatment or answers as to the cause? I'm scared that this is going to be how I feel forever.

My limited understanding is: The onset of starting thyroid medications for low thyroid levels may initially reduce any (suboptimal) body production of thyroid hormones that is still naturally occurring. So until the pill form of thyroid medication you have started gets optimized in your system (a often slow process) improvement isn't forthcoming until then. You may actually feel worse before feeling better.

Dedicated thyroid online groups I have read will tell you that thyroid hormones can not work well unless your body's vitamin D, folate, ferritin and vitamin B-12 levels are in optimal ranges. They recommend testing them once a year (even if you end up having to pay for self testing). Should you have to self test, it is best to have a doctor review results nonetheless before supplementing so that any underlying condition does not go undiagnosed. If say, one's vitamin level is low, prescriptions to cover the cost of a key vitamin such as these should be offered.

Thank you! I will see if my Dr. Will test if not I’ll find someone who will. I think advocating for ourselves is our best bet. It’s literally like pulling teeth trying to explain how I’m feeling to Drs. I appreciate your advice and information.

I am a year out from my initial COVID and have been doing PT the entire time. The vestibular part of this has helped me with balance and dizziness even though sensorineural hearing loss was the only ENT finding. My balance has been an ongoing problem but slowly it is improving. The first rehab doctor (after I was discharged from the hospital) said I have a severe proprioceptive disorder but from what is the question. Pt helps but it has and still is a challenge. Prior to my hospitalization with COVID I had some balance problems that were undiagnosed but that had resulted in serious falls with multiple fractures. This was over a 3-4 year period prior to COVID. It was just so much worse and constant after COVID.

The biggest help has been PT. I was eventually diagnosed with POTS as
well but this doesn’t explain all the dizziness and motion sickness or the severity of the issues.

Hello,
My Covid hit me in Aug 2021 and still have some of these same symptoms. It's bad in the morning and hard to get out of bed. It gets better as the day goes on, probably around 1:00 or 2:00.
Are your issues worse in the morning?

In the last year I have taken 2 very serious falls FOR NO REASON! Latest fall resulted in hip replacement surgery ....All I was doing was bending down to open a cabinet door and simply fell to my right and ended in hospital. Have never had balance issues and the only thing I can think of is that this is related to Covid. I did take the two shot vaccine regimen after I had already recovered from Covid ... only to take preemptive measures in case I wanted to travel and at that time we all needed to show proof of vaccine. Anyone else have this same problem?????

I just started another round of PT. My therapist has me doing 'Frenkel' exercises. They reproduced the sensations of dizziness and being off balance that was so hard for me to describe. I am making progress with it. CAUTION, go very slowly and take your time getting up after doing them-I went too fast and had several near falls. Maybe have someone around when starting out.

I am fortunate in that my balance is terrible, but I haven't fallen. I am careful to have my walking stick near by or to have something to hang onto. I also don't walk very much, which is not good. Anyway, this has been going on for nearly 4 years now. I have tried physical therapy, balance therapy, medicine, and acupuncture with nothing helping except a special balance therapy and that has only been of limited value. So, I completely sympathize with you and don't offer any advice except to keep trying. Maybe one of these days there will be a cure.

Hi everyone. Just a personal experience of possible thyroid issue affecting balance, dizziness, movement feeling while still. Have great PT over last year yet felt food/med seemed to make these symptoms worse. In research found the green tea, on low inflammation list provided by my healthcare system, should not be consumed within at least hour after taking thyroid medication. I caution everyone to check for contraindications of anything you ingest as even the nutritionist/dietician/ pcp were unaware of this when I consulted directly about this with each of them over the last year and half☹️ I have noticed slight improvement over the last couple of weeks and hope all of us can benefit from this🌈
