Sharp pain in groin and penis started two weeks after catheter removal
I had a Prostatectomy 6 weeks ago April 12 . Catheter and drain were removed 10 days later. Within two weeks started getting burning and stinging in the penis and scrotum. Though the urine culture was negative doctor decided to do a round of Bactria and Prednisone. Neither have helped. The pain and stinging are constant but less in the morning. Has anyone else had these issues.

Hi @linda1947, welcome to Connect. I'm tagging a few other members who had a prostatectomy. Perhaps @403211th @kujhawk1978 @9876 @tiss @billcando @speed7484 and @hodagwi can share their experiences.
It does sound abnormal to be experiencing pain and stinging for such an extended period of time. I would contact your doctor again as I would be concerned about risk of infection. Are you drinking plenty of liquids?
Thank you for responding. Saw Dr last week. Drinking lots of water. Dr is consulting on whether to go on Gabapentin.
I had robotic surgery in Jan 14. Went in on Monday, out on Tuesday. On Wednesday I was out walking. A week later the catheter was out and I was back at the gym playing basketball, lifting weights. What you describe does not sound “normal.”
Yes, I have had these symptoms for three years now post prostatectomy. Pain is about 3-4 on the 1-10 pain scale and got a little worse after an inguinal hernia was fixed. Pain roughly follows the urethra and can be lessened with hydrocodon but I rarely use it for obvious reasons. I have had all the diagnostic procedures with no adverse findings and PSA remains undetectable so the good news is it is not cancer. It is probably the result of pudendal nerve damage during the surgery which may not heal. I tried gabapentin but could not tolerate it, also had steroid pudendal nerve block that had no effect. I have learned to live with the pain. Apparently most such pain clears up within a few months, presumably due to nerve regeneration and I hope that is your outcome. Otherwise, I can give you lots of tips on how to live with it.
Horace1818, I’m 16 days post robotic radical prostatectomy and 6 days since catheter was removed. I started feeling sharp pains in penis while still having catheter in. Catheter was removed and still having sharp pains in penis and urethra seems irritated and hurts at tip as well. I was on antibiotic in case of UTI. I’m done with antibiotic but still having pain. I seem to have a weaker stream when urinating with some pain. I had no problems with urinating before prostatectomy. I also seem to painful or sore testicles still. How did you deal with this pain and are you still encountering the pain today? I realize your post is old but hopefully you are still on forum. Thanks.
Hi @cirrussantafe
Does that mean you fly a cirrus in Santa Fe?
I'm at about the 1 year mark for RP. Here's what my experience was...
I recall having soreness in the testicles, particularly left for some reason. Dr's said give it time and it indeed lessened over time.
I also recall pain in the penis, particularly at the far end of the urethra, it felt like a small piece of glass or something was stuck at the end. I let that go and decided to see what happened on my own. That lasted for several months, it went away.
The weaker stream and pain when urinating when combined like that I'd make sure you're telling the docs, but, it may just be soreness from the operation still. 6 days doesn't seem a lot to me for the kind of healing that has to go on there. Your body has a lot of "adjusting" to do. Also, the nerves heal very slowly. I think I was at least 3-4 mos before I felt some akin to normalcy.
I think the important thing is to keep the doctors in the loop, if they have a portal you may be able to upload a report or even call and leave a message with your symptoms so they can tell you if they think it's normal. I'm guessing you should have a follow up in about a week?
Best of Luck!
@wen265,
No, Cirrus is the name of my late cat that was named after cirrus clouds. :).
Thank you very much for your reply,I appreciate your information. I have written as you indicated, my urologist regarding my concerns. I did unfortunately start with a UTI on the 10th day of having my catheter. I’ve since finished the antibiotics and wonder if some of the symptoms are from that. Im 52 and just dealing with incontinence and sone of the post op side effects. I’ve been doing kegel exercises and will start physical therapy soon. Wish me luck on my journey and I wish you luck on yours as well. Thank you,
I had the RP surgery 4 years ago.
The spasm like pain in the penis to scrotum started soon and never went away
I believe that a nerve was damaged during the surgery.
It is not constant comes and goes.
I finally found a medication that helps to provide temporary relief.
90mg Etoricoxib
Hope that helps
Hi I had prostatectomy 9/28/21. My catheter popped out on its own on 10/2/21. I was scheduled to have it removed on 10/4/21. No one on my medical team was that concerned. Unfortunately I have had penis pain in the tip ever since, especially when urinating. I have seen numerous doctors since and no one has an answer. I have also tried several medications and none help. Any insights would be appreciated, thanks.
Read your comment and I’m having very similar pain after 30 days post radical prostatectomy. Burning near tip of penis much of the time, especially when urinating. Some pain when squatting or standing too long. Very discouraging! Doctor says this is normal and should go away in a couple more months. Curios to see how things have come along for you!
