Sharp pain in groin and penis started two weeks after catheter removal

Posted by linda1947 @linda1947, May 28, 2019

I had a Prostatectomy 6 weeks ago April 12 . Catheter and drain were removed 10 days later. Within two weeks started getting burning and stinging in the penis and scrotum. Though the urine culture was negative doctor decided to do a round of Bactria and Prednisone. Neither have helped. The pain and stinging are constant but less in the morning. Has anyone else had these issues.

I had a catheter back in March 2023 however since it's removal I've been experiencing the same burning at the tip of my penis.

Your correct in saying it's not much of a problem in the morning. Yet it feels as if my urination canal at the tip of my penis has an open wound that won't go away.

Having erectile dysfunction does not help.

I have the same problem 20 months from prostatectomy.
I’ve been tested for every possible urethritis infection with negative results. I go to Mayo Rochester next week to hopefully get the answer. This has affected my quality of life significantly and is not a minor irritation. I have not found an answer here locally in Vermont or NH.

I have pain/discomfort in left side groin area also. I had RP April 26. I noticed after biopsy some discomfort. Had CT scan before surgery and showed nothing alarming. I seem to feel it more after surgery.

Prior to RP during a biopsy one-off the needle shots hit something that caused a pain in the underside near the penis tip. I could feel the pain occasionally after, and after my RP the pain was stronger in the same spot. I’m a little past 3/mos post surgery and it seems to be a bit worse. Hopefully, it will subside.

Hi @linda1947, welcome to Connect. I'm tagging a few other members who had a prostatectomy. Perhaps @403211th @kujhawk1978 @9876 @tiss @billcando @speed7484 and @hodagwi can share their experiences.

It does sound abnormal to be experiencing pain and stinging for such an extended period of time. I would contact your doctor again as I would be concerned about risk of infection. Are you drinking plenty of liquids?

Back in Mayo 2023 I had a catheter inserted to put some type of stain to see the bottom of prostrate during set up for proton treatment. It was not a pleasant experience.

I then experienced and continue to experience the same issue I read here. I burning sensation toward the end of the penis after urnination. Today I mentioned this to Oncologist/Radiologist and said proably some trauma to end of penis and should rectify itself in a couple of months.

Is there something to look out for that we should be looking for. I did not have the RP and I would described my pain as minor but noticeable. I am just worried it could be something else or need to address it further.

Hi sorry for your situation. I had my prostate removed 9/28/21. Ever since my catheter popped out on its own 5 days later I have had pain in the tip of my penis both during urination and other times when not urinating. I have seen numerous urologists and tried several medications. Unfortunately no one has any answers and nothing works to relieve the pain. I also tried pelvic floor therapy to no avail. I'm convinced the catheter injured me.

I’m just leaving urology Mayo Clinic Rochester for the same pain you describe. Mine is now 21 months since the RP.
They think it is Lichen Sklerosus.
The treatment prescribbed for me is several weeks of intraurethral steroid ( clobetasol ) This diagnosis from cystoscopy and physical exam both urology and dermatology. I’m hopeful as I have been suffering for 21 months with no answers and lots of testing for typical uti type infections.
You may want to reach out to a specialist in urology because many urologists are not up on this and it is not so common a problem apparently.
I plan to update here after I get some time in on my treatments.
I wish you well.
Stay tuned.

Sounds like same symptoms after a catheter. My radiologist/oncologist did comment he thought it was trauma during catheter in/out. I was told when start of radiation to take cranberry supplements and/or cranberry juice. It would create an acidic urine and help with keeping infections down.

Not sure if that is affecting and does not sound like it as the symptoms being described here are the same I have.

Too bad with all the radiation damage to my prostrate and body that the catheter damage is what I feel.

I had the same symptoms after radical prostatectomy in September 2018.
It got worse with pain radiating to groin and into buttocks.
After 4 years without solutions I had to start hormone injections and pills to reduce PSA to zero. You know what that means.
Incredibly the pain in the penis and groin Disappeared.
Any experts out there who can explain it?
