Sharp pain in groin and penis started two weeks after catheter removal

Posted by linda1947 @linda1947, May 28, 2019

I had a Prostatectomy 6 weeks ago April 12 . Catheter and drain were removed 10 days later. Within two weeks started getting burning and stinging in the penis and scrotum. Though the urine culture was negative doctor decided to do a round of Bactria and Prednisone. Neither have helped. The pain and stinging are constant but less in the morning. Has anyone else had these issues.

Horace1818, I’m 16 days post robotic radical prostatectomy and 6 days since catheter was removed. I started feeling sharp pains in penis while still having catheter in. Catheter was removed and still having sharp pains in penis and urethra seems irritated and hurts at tip as well. I was on antibiotic in case of UTI. I’m done with antibiotic but still having pain. I seem to have a weaker stream when urinating with some pain. I had no problems with urinating before prostatectomy. I also seem to painful or sore testicles still. How did you deal with this pain and are you still encountering the pain today? I realize your post is old but hopefully you are still on forum. Thanks.

To read your story is to hear my exact situation. I am 30 days post RP surgery and am experiencing pain at tip of penis, especially when urination. Doctor says this is normal and should heal with time. It’s been 9 months since your post. Hopefully the situation has resolved? Please share how you’re doing and what you have done to alleviate your symptoms. Thank You!

Hi @linda1947, welcome to Connect. I'm tagging a few other members who had a prostatectomy. Perhaps @403211th @kujhawk1978 @9876 @tiss @billcando @speed7484 and @hodagwi can share their experiences.

It does sound abnormal to be experiencing pain and stinging for such an extended period of time. I would contact your doctor again as I would be concerned about risk of infection. Are you drinking plenty of liquids?

Hi Colleen,
Are you still the director role? Looking for support on replies I sent to several messages that relate to me. Unfortunately, the comments I’m replaying to are years old and unlikely those people will respond. Is it possible to alert them of my replies? Thank You

Hi @myersja, I'm still here. 🙂 I see that you have replied specifically to @cirrussantafe who is also still active on the forum, but maybe not checking daily. I'm confident that they'll return once they have a chance. You'd be surprised how many members check the forum regularly to help others even 6, 7, 8+ years after diagnosis.

I see that you're still experiencing a burning sensation near tip of the penis, especially when urinating. While this may be normal after a prostectomy, you're concerned that this continues still and you are 1 month out since surgery. Have I got that right?

Hi Colleen,

First allow me to say that your quick response on a Sunday is impressive! Appreciate your attentiveness.

Yes, you are correct. Burning urination can be normal for some, but most do not experience this side effect. I am concerned that it will persist. I believe one of my next steps is to reach out to the urology department at the Mayo to get a 2nd opinion. Is this something that you could steer me with?

Kind Regards,
John

I had something similar for a few months, it literally felt like a small piece of glass near the tip of my penis. Finally one day it was completely gone. I sort of thought it might be a piece of the dissolving stitches stuck there while they were going their dissolving process. But that's just a WAG (Wild Ass Guess)

Could've been anything for all I know.

Good Luck to you!

I had a catheter back in March 2023 however since it's removal I've been experiencing the same burning at the tip of my penis.

Your correct in saying it's not much of a problem in the morning. Yet it feels as if my urination canal at the tip of my penis has an open wound that won't go away.

Having erectile dysfunction does not help.

I commented further down the page oops.

However what you are experiencing is what I'm experiencing.

I had a catheter removed back in March 2023 however the burning pain is still prevalent. Couple with erectile dysfunction this does not help.

I don't know whether or not I mention this to my Doctor.

Sorry to hear about the pain. Soon after the Prostatectomy I also experienced similar symptoms, which increased in severity as time went by. They eventually ceased after I started hormonal treatments - my Docs dont have an explanation.
I believe that it is a side effect of the surgery- perhaps some little nerve
They suggested some pain killers- I resisted - dont want to go down that dangerous rabbit hole.
Just need to handle it as best you can- easy said than done
