Recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes

Posted by nonnajanet4 @nonnajanet4, Jun 2, 2023

I’m new at this. Just diagnosed. I started taking Metformin ER at dinner on May 23 at 500mg and gradually increased it up. I am now on 2000mg Metformin ER at dinner since May 30. I’ve changed my Weight Watchers app to the Diabetic setting and have been counting carbs at every meal. I
have protein with any carb. My endocrinologist said not to go over 40 carbs for breakfast, lunch or dinner and 20 carbs for snack. I’m doing ok with my bloods 2 hours after meals but I can’t seem to get my morning fasting glucose down! (I also take Tirosint(morning) and Cytomel(10-4-10) for thyroid.) Any suggestions?

Welcome @nonnajanet4, great idea to change your Weight Watchers app to the diabetic setting. I admire you for counting calories. I find that challenging to do. Weight Watchers has a long history of helping people change their eating habits.

Are the dietary recommendations very different of the diabetic setting? How are you doing with the adjustments?

Thanks for the link! The WW Diabetic setting makes you count fruits and starchy vegetables. Plus other foods that were zero points due to higher carb content. I do get 7 extra daily points. What is also helpful is each food and portion will give you the nutritional value right there so you know exactly what the values are. I’m doing well so far since May 9th when I was diagnosed but still having a problem with the morning fasting bloods. Seeing the Endocrinologist Diabetic NP for the first time on June 27th. Going to pick her brain.

@nonnajanet4, Hi. You might want to ask your health care provider about Smyogi's Syndrome or Dawn Syndrome. Some diabetics do experience elevated morning fasting glucose readings because blood sugar actually drops later in the night which triggers the liver to produce glucose, thus raising serum glucose level so it tests high on the morning fasting level. I am not a doctor and am not diagnosing, just sharing what happens to me and what my physicians have told me about it. Wishing you the best!

Make sure you eat a snack before bed; if your liver perceives you are hungry, it will create sugar and up goes your fasting sugar level! (Advice from my doctor and especially my wise dietician!)

Thanks! I was reading up on this. What did you do to get mornings readings in range?

I've tried adjusting my insulin dosage and increased my bedtime snack so my glucose level doesn't drop so fast but it doesn't always help, partly because of my renal disease plus a slow GI system which sometimes slows nutrient absorption and sometimes speeds it up. Docs and I have tried various things but none of them helps all the time. Sorry not to be more helpful but I struggle with this situation daily.

Hopefully one day there will be a cure. It’s a very intricate balance between hormones. I am only on Metforminwith dinner at this point. I also take 2 kinds of thyroid medication. One at bedtime. I’ll be asking lots of questions at my June 27 th appointment! Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your suggestion! My fasting glucose was 335 and A1C 12.5 on May 9 for the first time ever. I was all normal last May 2022 so I had no choice but to be put on Metformin on May 23. I’ve been off all sweets, no potatoes, rice and pasta since May 9th. I count all my carbs. I changed my Weight Watchers app to Diabetic. My 2 hr after a meal bloods have come down to 150-189 in 12 days. I just can’t seem to find the right combo to keep from spiking overnight.
