Phlegm in my throat and post nasal drip after Covid

Posted by danny2022 @danny2022, Dec 18, 2022

Ever since I had covid in January of 2022 I recovered from the virus but I was left with a constant phlegm in the back of my throat and post nasal drip that will not go away. The feeling of having mucus in the back of my throat actually gets worse when I try to get rid of it by coughing. I have been given steroid inhalers, albuterol, allergy medication, but none of these work. The mucus gets worse especially after I eat. I've never felt like this before and it all started after covid. Can anybody relate to what I am going through?

I bought it as a mixture in sachets. You need to dissolve one sachet in 240ml warm water. Here are the proportions of mine:

I've actually been rinsing my nose with xylitol for the last 6 weeks. Xylitol is used to break down biofilms so that antibiotics can have an effect when taken. I theorise that the key may be a course of the appropriate antibiotics after a while of rinsing.

Has anyone had an operation called Fess? General anaesthetic then a scope with surgical end to open up my sinuses which he thinks may be blocked blocked or swollen stopping me able me to blow my noses instead i it’s always a pot nasal drip. When I use all the usual meds and was put ona week of steroid tablets then 6 months of continual steroid nasal spray had to stop as it gave me dreadful depression alternating with panics after a week of stopping back to normal. I don’t know what to expect with op or continue choking on mucous?

I had blocked sinuses from covid..I was blocked to where I couldn't breathe through my nose..the navage for my sinuses really really helped..I took have the mucus...I know 5 people who had that fess thing done...they all said not to do it.
It was only a temporary fix and other problem's came after they did it...

PS...you'd be amazed what comes out of your sinuses...be sure to use distilled water..Not tap water... the rinse/irrigation has really helped keeping the mucus under control and now I can blow my nose..I couldn't do the before...hang in there..

I hope it works for you as well! It's really the xylitol in the mixture that makes the difference I think. Rinsing with salt only never did anything for me. Good luck!!

I meant to ask - what antibiotics are you taking?

Claritromycine retard. Because they tested to which antibiotics the Staphylococcus bacteries reacted that was found. For now I'd say that rinsing does the trick and the antibiotics might help ofc, but I'm only on day 4 out of 10 yet.

Was it over the counter or did you need a prescription? How did you apply it and did you need to use distilled water?

https://www.kno-winkel.nl/en/dos-medical-nasal-saline-with-xylitol.html I bought it online as that was cheaper than prescription according to my ENT. I add it to my neilmed sinus rinse bottle and add 240ml water. They say you can use tap water in the Netherlands because that's safe enough, but ofc you can choose that for yourself.

It really felt like that. Only I just discovered something new: ENT advised me to start with a daily nasal rinse with a salt/bicarbonate soda/xylitol mixture. And damn, after 4 days 2 huge mucus globs are dislodged from somewhere high up my nose/sinuses and the post nasal drip has stopped. I'm starting to think that the mucus 'balls' were stuck there all along and prevented normal drainage..

Really pleased for you. I don’t know now what to do. I have been doing a mix of Sterimar nasal spray (saline) no use but then I tried daily for 6 months Neilmed ready mixed bicarbonate and salt which you add to warm water and do-a sinus rinse. Occasionally something small comes out. I don’t understand how I can freely breathe through my nose but blowing it yields nil. Meanwhile very thick white mucus post nasal drip which then lodges continually in my tonsil crypts and continually runs down my throat.

I'd really try the xylitol mixture. I did rinses with just salt and bicarbonate soda earlier but they didn't help me. The xylitol is really breaking up the biofilm I think and finally lots of nasty stuff comes out. I can't believe this was stuck there all along. Let me know if it worked for you, I really hope so. Fingers crossed!

Mayo Clinic ENT had me sinus rinse using Neilmed ( either Netipot or spray device) with added RX "Budesonide" 2xdaily. Initially was thought might help smell/taste to return, but didn't do much. It did however get rid of the constant phlegm.
