Has anyone heard of Osteoprev as a supplement to improve bone loss?

Posted by sweetpea60 @sweetpea60, May 18, 2023

Hello, I have recently been prescribed Osteoprive along with Shronhum and D3, K2 drops. Just wondering if anyone had tired this and if you had results. I refuse to take the Prolia shot and decided to take a Holistic approach. Also has anyone tired AlgaeCal? Thank you, Lynn

Yes, I took Algae Cal and Stronium Boost for a year and a half before having a repeat DEXA where I actually improved in both my spine , average went from -3.6 to -3.3 -that was a 5 something percent increase
And my one hip value improved by 6 something percent as well and the other decreased minimally. ( On vacation so don’t have actual values for you right now) . That was very encouraging. However, last summer I had a compression fracture of L 1 , but I will explain that I was just over CoVID and had been coughing a lot to the point where my low back was bothering me and then to boot I stood up off a horrible couch quickly flexing my trunk foward ,which now I know after learning much that keeping your trunk in a straight upright posture helps to decrease the potential of fracturing your spine. Anyway , since then I have backed off of using the Stronium part of the Algae Cal products as the information is a bit conflicted on the use of Stronium. As I understand it from some peoples perspectives “in the know” it can give you a better DEXA Reading because it can replace calcium in the bones and is heavier in weight than calcium. Also, told it can make your bones more brittle. But there is also information out there that feels Stronium has its place . For me I have decided for now to just take the Algae Cal and not the Stronium until I feel more settled on that. Good luck in your learning of information!!

Strontium gives misleading readings on the DEXA scan, making bones look better than they are. Just fyi. In Europe the ranelate form was banned for a time due to cardiovascular risks but it has been restored for those who cannot tolerate anything else.

Prolia is not your only option. If your bone density is low, I hope you will talk to your doctor about other meds: Tymlos, Forteo and Evenity build bone and Reclast, like Prolia, is an anti-resorptive.

Osteoprev has good ingredients but I take them separately so I get the right amounts, customizing them for myself. Here are the ingredients:

Vitamin D3 (as Cholecalciferol) 1,000 IU.
Vitamin K (500 mcg K1, 25 mcg K2 as MK7) 525 mcg.
Folic Acid 800 mcg.
Calcium (as Hydroxyapatite, DimaCal Di-Calcium Malate) 250 mg.
Phosphorus (as Calcium Hydroxyapatite, Chelate) 110 mg.

If you bone density is not too bad, check out McCormick's "Whole Body Approach to Osteoporosis."

I am waiting for my latest DEXA scan and am considering Algae Cal depending on the results and what Dr. McCormick suggests after I have a consultation with him. I also got all the blood and urine tests done that he recommends and am waiting on those results. I already had a complete workup from the allergist, which showed no allergies to anything that might be affecting the proper absorption of nutrients. Hopefully, once I have all this information I can make a truly informed decision about what to do. The information about Strontium is very helpful as I was planning on taking both Algae Cal and Strontium if I go that route and now think it will be just the Algae Cal. I don't want any falsely positive results on bone density scans, that's for sure.

Thank you for your feed back. I have ordered Osteoprive already so will try that for a month then probably switch to Algae Cal. After reading your response and prior responses It gives me reason to research a little deeper. Lynn

Having read a little more and considering Windyshores comment about Strontium as well as other information I've read about Strontium, specifically I think I'll go for for the Algae Cal Plus. I will probably just bite the bullet and get 12 months worth, but having looked at the ingredients, it will mean I can stop other supplements I've been taking, so the cost won't be as bad.

Had you been taking anything like Algae Cal before the Dexa scan? If so please let us know the results. I go to Osteo Strong and they have the Algae Cal there for sale. Thank you

I started taking something called Bone Builder that has Vitamin K in it about a month ago. I am in the process of trying to decide whether or not to take any of the prescription medicines and want to cover all the bases before deciding. I had an Echolight scan done last October that showed things to be considerably better than the Dexa scan last August had indicated, so I have been researching everything and having extensive allergy testing done to eliminate the possibility of malabsorption being a factor. The allergy testing showed no such problems. I just got a celiac profile done to test for gluten sensitivity and that was negative. I also just had all the blood work done that Dr. McCormick advises and am waiting for those results. When I get those along with the latest Dexa scan results, I am going to send copies of all my medical results from the last three years to Dr. McCormick and bite the bullet on a $350 consultation to see what he thinks I should do. His book, recommended on this site, impressed me tremendously. I myself have a a background in pre-pharmacy and pre-veterinary, so I have had a lot of medical education. This has helped me a great deal in understanding how these medicines work and which ones I would want to take if any. And, I must say, Windyshores on this site has been an invaluable source of information to me.
