Bronchiectasis and diet

I’ve heard and read conflicting views and recommendations regarding the best diet for those of us with Bronchiectasis, esp. regarding dairy products and whether they contribute to mucus production. What have you found out regarding diet and foods that trigger problems?

My husband feels that because I don’t eat enough, that is why my immune system is so bad and I keep contracting bacteria on flights and in public places. I suppose he is right, but when you are fighting (this time, two bacteria), I have no desire to eat. But assuming that he is right, have any of you found the best foods and dietary practices to boost your immune systems?

Last month National Jewish Health gave a conference for patients with bronchiectasis and NTM disease. The nutrition supervisor, Michelle MacDonald, was very clear about the importance of maintaining a healthy weight. Research shows that a BMI over 18.5 is associated with a better prognosis. She also stressed the importance of increasing protein intake and she dispelled many of the myths associated with dairy and other issues.

As soon as the recording is available, I will share it with this group.

In the meantime, I suggest a consultation with a nutritionist. I have recommendations, but don’t know if I’m allowed to share them on this site or through a private message.

Hi Linda, any news on the recording of Michelle McDonald's speech? would it be okay do you think to contact her at NJH?

I am urged by one doctor to eat a LOT of meat, and others say veg. and no meat. Also experimenting with dairy and non dairy products; has anyone else concluded anything about them?

I think the dairy issue is dependent on the person. I did a three week trial of no dairy and nothing improved. Someone I know claims it got rid of her asthma. I think the scientific evidence is probably lacking on this one way or the other.

Hi Lori, I am convinced the Mediterranean eating plan is best for all medical conditions. Studies show it's best for cardiac issues. There is some recent evidence it also benefits certain cancers and autoimmune disorders. Makes sense because of its high levels of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, healthy fats, fiber. It endorses whole foods (not necessary raw), lots of fruits and vegetables and avoids trans & saturated fats (fatty meats), processed foods. American Heart Association endorses it. I haven't changed my eating habits since being diagnosed March 30 except maybe smaller meals a little oftener. I too have had difficulty maintaining my weight the past few years and now know why. Wishing you the best.

Thank you so very much!! I’m going to do research on the Mediterranean diet! Also I’m now collecting videos on immune builders like dandy lion tinctures (apparently it’s pretty easy to make—can’t believe they’ve just been annoying weeds in our gardens all this time), and Ginger/lemon/honey/ceyanne pepper immune boosts (also easy to make). Immune issues were never even on my radar until recently…ugh!

It should be available in the coming week or so. But no news so far. However, Michelle MacDonald has done a dozen videos for NTM Info and Research. If you go to their YouTube channel and type in nutrition, many of them should come up. “youtube ntmir nutrition”. Additionally, Michelle has a consulting business and many people get a lot out of having a consultation with her. Linda

Thank you for the links. Heard forever that dandelion greens are high in vitamins, so antioxidants make sense. I'm definitely interested in that one. Back to best eating plan--I read on 2 different sources that a high carb diet creates extra work for the lungs. I don't remember the sites and there was no information about the physiology behind the statement, so I remain skeptical. I asked my pulmonologist on my 2nd and most recent visit. He said "that's beyond my scope". So I continue to make every effort to avoid processed carbs--white bread, white rice , white flour products, fruit juices and added sugars. I don't avoid carbs because I don't want further weight loss and make sure I get adequate protein. Stay well!

Hi I have bronchiectasis..but am still waiting to see a lung specialist. I'm on incruse ellipta..I seem to be coughing more. Been on 4 antibiotics since Christmas. My breathing can be tricky st times..any general advice much appreciated.
