My son has hives on his skin and Dr suggests XOLAIR
Hi, I have a 15 year old son who is on high school swimming team. Last year he developed itchy skin and started to have hives on his skin. He went to doctor and tested that he is allergic to lots of things including Dust F Mite and a bunch of others. It's been a year and hasn't gone away. He has to take OTC Aller-Tec daily. Otherwise, the symptom will come back. We went to the doctor again and she suggested to start on XOLAIR injection regularly which can last for years. We are wondering if this has long term side effects. Is there better alternative? Thank you very much.

Thanks for the update! It’s great that he was seen at Mayo.
It may be a good idea to follow up with Mayo at some point. You should still try to find another good allergy/immunology specialist locally.
Is your son able to do any swimming now or any other physical activity?
Has he been swimming in school or on a private team?
Yes, Mayo was great. Very helpful. Out plan was initially to give Xolair 6 months and then f/u with Mayo again.
Luckily he has been swimming still. He swims year round between club and school team. The POTS doc is very adamant that he continues with this, otherwise he would be way worse than he is. His times have seen a steady decrease in the past 2 years. It is quite devastating for him for him to add time like he has been. And we aren't talking a second or two. Like adding 14 seconds to a 100. It is heartbreaking actually. I am really hoping that Xolair helps.

I think it is great that he is able to swim. I understand how frustrating it is for him to see the added seconds. On the other hand, he is continuing to use his muscles which will make it easier when his illnesses are controlled.
When my son got sick we first noticed it at a meet. He was like a rock thrown into the water.
Has he talked with a psychologist about his situation?
Not lately. He has tried counseling a couple times over the years and it was not helpful either time. Good suggestion but I think he is going to keep plugging away and see what happens. At least he is starting to think about a future that may not include swimming. But hopefully Xolair helps. We went to the ER a couple days ago and the stomach pain/bloating/cramping is due to constipation. He had hernia surgery a few weeks ago so I think the opioids and not swimming/exercising caused this. I should have thought about that. So he is going to keep going with Xolair. Next injection is 13 days. Fingers crossed. Thanks for your support.

I really hope that Xolair will continue to work. It should remove some of his current anxiety about his future.
It would be very nice if you can post an update now and then.
