Still having chest tightness 3 weeks out from covid

Posted by gsakamoto @gsakamoto, Apr 28, 2023

This is my third time with covid. I was on paxlovid last June 2022 and got a relapse two weeks after thinking I was over it. Now three ago ago I got it again. It’s different this time. I just had a little scratchy throat and a little congestion. No fever, chills or loss of smell just a little fatigue . They put me on prednisone (5 days) and Wixela and used my albuterol as needed. I was feeling pretty good a week after taking prednisone. I thought I was on the mends . Did some light walking for a few days but noticed tightness of. My chest got worse with each passing day where I was taking 1-2 puffs of my albuterol a day. Last week and this week the tightness in my chest persists everyday sometimes in the morning but usually in the afternoon is worst.
There is no coughing, I’m just fatigue with chest discomfort . I do worry about this so my PCP prescribed lorazepam to reduce anxiety and to aid in my sleep due to the prednisone side effect causing sleeplessness.it’s seems that even talking or slight excitement or stress/ anxiety brings on this tightness in my chest. I’m not even doing anything strenuous at all.
It’s very uncomfortable not knowing what is causing this onset of tightness in my chest.
Can anyone out there relate to this. And give me some thoughts of why I’m like this for the past two weeks?

God Bless You. I had a bad case of Covid last August with double pneumonia and ashtmatic bronchitis and ended up in the ER. I too felt better on steroids. I had shortness of breath and fatigue for about 2 months. The shortness of breath made me feel anxious too. I would lie down when I got that way, use my proair inhaler for asthma. I had to let some things go for a while. My heart rate stayed in the 130's for about 2 months as well and then came back down into the 60's. I got a echo/stress test done to make sure I did not have heart damage and my heart was fine. Rest is healing with Covid and it's frustrating I know. It just takes time. Prayers going up right now.

P.S. I had chest tightness as well for about 2 months.

Thank you for comment. How do you deal with that daily tightness and fatigue. Not to mention the anxiety or fear I’m experiencing.

Thank you so much for your response. I’m so glad you are doing better and on the to road to recovery. It’s so comforting to know there are people out there who share our experiences. Thank you thank you. God Bless you too.
I’ve gone to ER several times during this current covid because I was so afraid. I’m a senior citizen at 67 and live alone. So it doesn’t make it any easier. I have family close by who are very supportive but none who I can relate too concerning our situations.
A lot I think is that I over think what’s happening to me and stress over that and I know that never helps. Are you the same way ? And if so how do you address that feeling of anxiety
Thank you so much
Glenn

All of these symptoms can make you feel anxious no doubt. I had to use my inhaler up to 4 times a day and was on about 3 rounds of prednisone. I rebounded with asthmatic bronchitis. I was exhausted. I would do a little something and then rest. Just walking to the mailbox was exhausting. I felt like I was in slow motion and it was even tiring to think, so I just prayed to God. My doctor told me the shortness of breath, fatigue and chest tightness could last a while from Covid pneumonia and to expect it...he was right. My faith in the Lord, my family, church and friends and much prayer got me through. Also, try to distract your mind when you are feeling overly anxious. I agree, talking is tiring. I know its hard when others don't understand. If you can, do a crossword puzzle, listen to soothing music, watch something on T.V. (if you can find anything decent!), whatever helps you to relax. If you like to read, find a good book to read. You have been through so much and I am so sorry. I will continue to pray for you. Covid is brutal and it takes time and you have had your share of it. Remember, rest is healing with Covid. Take care.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences with me. The helpful suggestions on how to relax and get through those days will be very helpful.
I found out the hard way by not resting with covid after feeling a little better.
Im taking your words of wisdom that “resting with covid is healing”
Thank you again. We will get through this with prayers, family and friends. We have too.
You’ve been through way more than I have and I look up to you with admiration and positivity.

Wow! I can’t believe how closely your experience mirrors mine. I posted last week under “Has anyone gotten back to normal…..”. To summarize, I tested positive in early February. Took Paxlovid and felt better for a couple of weeks. Then started to have shortness of breath during my walks and swims. One day, after walking a couple of blocks, I got so short of breath, I couldn’t continue. I took my pulse - it was 48 and irregular with many “skipped” beats (probably PVCs). I was lightheaded and felt lousy. Since then, I’ve had days when I’m short of breath all the time, even while resting. I also use Wixela & albuterol inhaler for underlying mild asthma. Other days, my heart is irregular all day. In April, my internist put me on a 5 day course of prednisone for chest congestion. I landed in the ER with BP of 210/110. They put me on Amlodipine
BP is under control now. Am seeing a cardiologist and had EKG which at the time was essentially normal. Also did 24 hr. Holter monitor which showed irregularities. I am waiting to have a treadmill stress test in couple of weeks. My heart irregularities seem to be improving so hopefully the stress test will be normal. I guess that’ll mean it’s my lungs that are damaged. So, after 3 months, thankfully, I’m not as severely short of breath but still am gun shy about exercising again - like “waiting for the other shoe to drop.” I really don’t have any miraculous cure suggestions except giving it time. I do feel better every day compared to a month ago. However, like you, I have many anxious moments - deathly afraid of getting reinfected or even catching a cold. I don’t sleep very well. Also wondering if I’ll ever get back to normal. I’m 78 years old now so I just take it one day at a time. I’m hoping I can at least travel a bit more. It does help to get your thought down. Good luck to you and just know you are not alone in all this.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. It’s so comforting to know that I am not alone and theirs others out there sharing the issues as we are.
Today was one of those days. Mentally got up with a good mind set and was looking forward to watching golfing in the tube. All I did was a load of laundry, made my bed and watered a few potted plants I have outside. At 9:30 am I was so tired and weak I had to sit down and rest. I’ve done this routine numerous times before in the prior weeks of covid but was okay. Today it was like for no reason, i barely did anything. Frustrating as heck. I like you, love to walk and exercise but get gun shy with thoughts that I may just collapse somewhere. I committed myself to stay home bound for at least two weeks and only to go out for essential or doctor’s.
I just walk in my small yard to get some kind of exercise, though little as it is it’s something. One day at a time, one step at a time.
Thank you for responding
We’re going to be fine. New developments on the science of treating Post Covid Syndrome on the horizon. Keep the faith

Sorry, I started writing, then the page disappeared, so I’ll start over.
Like you, some days I’d wake up feeling pretty good but out of nowhere, I’d get congested and short of breath which would last all day. Or I’d start getting heart irregularities and feel lousy all day. But the last couple of days have been pretty good. Still short of breath on my walks but feel like I recovered faster. I hope I’m turning a corner 🤞but with this COVID you never know where else it’s lurking. It’s been 3 months now so hoping for the best. Hope this gives you a little encouragement - 3 months seems like a long time but others have been suffering for much longer. I can just suggest not to push your body too much and rest when you need to. Keep the faith and hang in there.
