Is Dr. Gundry and "leaky gut" a scam?

@tabithatwitch

Well, I have been researching anything that can return my regular BM since my intestinal prolapse surgery in October and now I am becoming more than a little concerned. I also read Dr Gundry's excerpts from his book and I think he sounds like he just wants money from people. Not an expert as he calls himself. I don't know what to use anymore because nothing is really working.. Doctors have prescribe the Miralax, Lactulose, Bisacodyl, Phillips Milk of Magnesia (yuk) and other over the counter things- such a waste of money .... the list goes on... I was so desperate last week I bought one of those liquid enema apparatus kits.. but I felt it was too dangerous and that I may harm myself even further... my PCP suggested eating 2 Kiwi's Fruits and at least 64 ounces of warm lemon water per day.. Apparently Kiwi's are the new "Prunes" Yoga and different types of twisting exercises sometimes gets things moving a bit, but none of this gives me the relief that is needed to be normal. I am literally full of ___ !! Today I decided I am no longer eating because it is not being eliminated properly. I can't go on this way any longer.. Each doctor seems to be of no help. This is such a condition that is difficult and embarrassing to talk about, even to a gastrologist .. I don't know... I feel something is terrible wrong.. Please, does anyone have any have any other suggestions about what I can do this weekend? Thank you so much for any response 🙁

For constipation, try cabbage water. Cook the cabbage in water, Cool it and drink the water.
Dr Gundry might be right about lectins in certain foods causing leaky gut syndrome?

Stool softener. I had the same problem. Now I proactively use every day. Also use magnesium tablets every day. Recommended dose on both are good enough. If not, extra stool softener is needed. If really stopped up, I use epsom salt water.

I am so very sorry to hear of your suffering with constipation despite everything you’ve tried from strong OTC medications to yoga to foods.

During Folfiri and Avastin I suffered from diarrhea which we managed to get on top of. Learned that it SO much better than having constipation.

I had part of my colon removed as part of cytoreductive surgery and I now and again go through awful bouts of constipation. I don’t like using the medication because while still effective with me I’m so worried my colon will stop working by itself.

I tried stopping all medication and going back to a very basic bland diet such as oat porridge (it has lots of soluble fibre as well as nutrients), drinking lots of water, yoga exercise for constipation and walking lots. So far I do feel better but early days.

With all you have been through it seems you need a GI doctor and testing to find out if there is something structurally wrong that might be fixed (eg surgery - my friend was diagnosed with an extra loop of colon).

Tabithatwitch, love your name.
I am not laughing at you, but I did chuckle when I read that you are literally full of💩and you are going to quit eating. I have had both for 17yrs. You have been through a lot and are getting lots of good advice from others so I will just use a list, good and bad, these are my personal experiences :
Enema: I have given myself many, it doesn't go up inside far enough. They can be very helpful. If you have never had one, they are an irritant and you will want to poop asap, the pressure is intense. The longer you can hold it in the more productive it will be. I get prepared with a towel and pillow, and stay on my knees (I don't lay down) as the pressure builds, I rock back and forth, it seems to lessen the pressure, then rock faster, count to ten, then again, anything to help you hold it in. I had success with Fleet enemas. Salt enemas were a painful failure.
I don't know if after your type of surgery you have to be extra cautious or not.
I currently use 3 capfuls of miralax and 5 Metamucil gummies, 1-2x day as needed. Sometimes I go straight to explosive diarrhea, or mush, or it takes 2 days to get moving.
I have been having X-rays every few months for years, only 1x I was normal. A few had mild poop, most showed heavy fecal load.
I would love to use food/yoga ect but I can't. Example with prunes, I ate 10-25 per day and got more backed up and gained weight.
I am simply too exhausted and in pain to wait to see if prunes or exercise might work. I just noticed that this is a year old post, so... I hope you have found your sweet spot and are doing great. Shelley

I too have had this problem for 11 years now after two auto accidents and severe scar tissue in abdomen by seatbelt.
One month to the day after 2nd accident I had severe abdominal pain and it was found I had a partial blockage. I did my own research. I have seen the damage doctors do to people with this problem. The only proven safe method is enema’s if you have backed up poop and time.
I went on a liquid diet and it took one month to break it up.
I lived like this for years ended up hospitalized with a perforated appendix and 4 day hospital stay. Now it was serious. It took a few more years till I found a Physical Therapist who broke all the scar tissue up and I no longer have partial blockages. I have found that kiwis do work wonders I had to eat 6 a day also warm prune juice and homemade blender vegetable soup. You have to change how you eat. Lots of vegetables, light soups, fish, chicken and fruit. No dairy, no wheat, NO SUGAR. One thing I learned through all this is you do not NEED large amount of food, you need the right food.
And of course add movement, brisk walking is wonderful and easy. It’s a change in lifestyle. This is only healed holistically.
As for the enema’s; Amazon carries the light blue silicon bag with open top so you can clean easily you can also buy a special device that cleans and dries tubing. And you sterilize tips. There are tutorials on how to do them I believe Dr Livingood is someone to follow for how to administer and types. All my doctors know I use them and not one has said they were dangerous, because it’s a method hospitals use.
I’m so sorry for what you’re experiencing I’ve been there and it’s very distressing; but this does safely work.

I had the same problem but finally solved it by increasing my fiber intake. For breakfast I eat half a cup of wheat bran fiber in almond milk. (could substitute All Bran or dairy milk). Then a shake with two heaping tablespoons of whole psyllium seeds sweetened ( I use vanilla flavored almond milk). That does the trick.

That should have WHOLE PSYLLIUM HUSKS not seeds

Have you tried acupuncture, it helps to get things flowing

Need to eat your greens and walk 2000 steps a day plus ballet leg lifts help and lie flat on your, then back lift one leg up and do crossovers keep legs straight 30 each side for oblique muscle strength in abdomen. 3 times a week.
Also Drink , as old news, but true : drink 8 glasses of water per day.

Have you had the opportunity to consult with a urogynecologist? They might be the right specialist for addressing your bowel prolapse or any associated concerns. Sometimes, the issue could be as simple as bladder prolapse, and a pessary might be a suitable solution for managing it.

From my personal experience, dealing with bowel issues can be challenging, and it's essential to have the right specialists involved. I underwent several procedures, including bowel resections and bladder repairs, due to a rectal hernia that was initially overlooked. Even renowned institutions like the Mayo Clinic can occasionally miss such diagnoses, highlighting the complexity of bowel health in women's care. More research in this area is vital.

Regarding laxatives and blockages, I found that natural coast fibre was quite effective. One tablespoon on cereal can help with blockages by providing the necessary texture to aid in movement. Laxatives make it too .
