Neuropathy Pain at Night: What helps?
THC or marijuana for me relieves pain from neuropathy. It works every time takes a few minutes and a few puffs of smoke and it comes it down for some crazy reason that makes this drug so popular.

Hello @steven120566, Welcome to Connect. It's good that you found something that has given you relief from a lot of the neuropathy pain. I'm one of the fortunate few that only have numbness and some tingling so the medication doesn't help with that anyway. I found Connect in 2016 and the one thing it's helped me to learn is how to become a better advocate for my health by learning as much as I can about my conditions and what treatments are available.
Two sites that I found for learning more that you might also find helpful if you haven't already seen them:
-- Neuropathy Commons: https://neuropathycommons.org/
-- Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy: https://www.foundationforpn.org/
The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy has a list of complementary and alternative treatments for neuropathy that many people have found helpful here - https://www.foundationforpn.org/living-well/complementary-therapies/.
Have you tried any other alternative or complementary treatments for your neuropathy? Do you mind sharing a little more about your diagnosis?
Gabapentin has been the only thing that helps me to be able to sleep at night
I did some research on Kartom. It isn't prescribed by many doctors. It has not yet been found to be advantageous for many people. It has interactions with many medications because of the way it is metabolized in the liver.
My husband has had neuropathy for over 6 years. When he is in pain l massage his legs with Amlactin. Then give him 2 Tylenol. He goes right to sleep. He is very active for a 91 year old. He swims and has PT. All these things help him deal with his pain. Amlactin is over the counter and can be found at Costco. There a stronger prescription form that you can get from your doctor.
Hello @mmorrison41 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. So sorry to read of your husband's neuropathy pain, however, it sounds as though the pair of you have found something that is working well!

Thank you so much for sharing so that other members can benefit. Did a doctor tell you about Amlactin or how did you come to find it?
I find that by taking Tramadol 50 mg before bed, and then 2 ibuprofen tabs, it helps me get to sleep.
Occas the pain in my feet wake me up in the am, as does the need to go to the bathroom.
My bladder is shot and I need to go every 1-2 hrs depending g on what liquids I have had.
I have no feeling when I have a bowel movement, I have to look into the bowl to see if I have had one.
I’m assuming this is all part of the neuropathy.
Anyone else have bladder and bowel issues.
I do have bladder and bowel issues (gas/bloat and constipation). The bladder issue is worse when I am in a lot of pain. I noticed that I would go to the bathroom once or twice every hour and my bladder is not even full. At night, it's worse. I have a portable urinal in my bedroom now because with my pain getting up to go to the bathroom often is suffering.
I'm working with a nutritionist now to find strategy to treat my GI symptoms. So far, I'm taking Triphala, increase my soluble fiber intake by eating chia seeds and other veggies and fruits seem to help.
I heard Tramadol can cause constipation. Have you discussed with your doctor about this possibility? For my neuropathy, I find low dose naltrexone to be really helpful cause other drugs including ibuprofen will cause GI issues.
am an 85 yr old female who was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in all four extremeities in the early 1990s, caused by pernicious anemia. I received B12 shots and then B12 pills for about fourteen years and the numbness was greatly reduced when in 2014 I was diagnosed with Small fiber neuropathy. At that time I only had pain, heat, itchiness and swelling in two toes. I declined a prescription because the pain was infrequent.
In Dec 2022 my PCP ordered a head c-t scan because I reported balance and falling issues. She then referred me to a neurologist and my appointment is in September. I have never talked with a neurologist about any of my concerns. I have never talked with my PCP, really, about bowel and bladder incontinence so I don’t know if they are related to the neuropathy or perhaps the diuretics I take for congestive heart failure. I have no sense of having a full bladder but when I stand up I have a flood. I can rarely walk to the bathroom without urinating before I get there and I rarely feel anything when I pass fecal matter. I set an alarm to remind me to go to the bathroom, I was interested to see that someone else was raising these issues. Is it neuropathy?
I am 92 and very familar with the incontinence. I belive the diuretics are causing the flood. I deal with this by always taking the diuretic at the same time each day. Then try to determine approximately when I get this rush of urine. The following day, I try to go to the bathroom approximately 1/4 to 1/2 hour before this time. I find it helps tremendously, no more flood.

Thank you for sharing your positive experience with THC. I wonder if it will work with the pill form instead of smoking. I will try it.
