Long lasting hematoma on buttock
Hi I fell down wood stairs almost 1 year ago, I had a horrible bruise, severe swelling on my right buttock. The swelling went down but the hematoma remained with a small bruise that is a half circle around the bottom of the hematoma. My concern is it’s has stayed this size for months. I’m wondering if this is permanent. Has this type of injury happened to anyone else?

It makes me wonder if something else is going on -- a lingering injury from the fall? Did you see a doctor about it? The initial horrible swelling sounds like you had a significant injury.
I had a 1/2 grapefruit size hematoma develop after an ICD replacement. My surgical team said they it was bigger than they’d ever seen before, and could go in and reduce it, but really preferred not to do anything invasive because of risks. So we iced aggressively at first. It took about 3 months for all the swelling and bruising to go away, very successfully. Now, I wasn’t sitting on my bruise, so it didn’t get the constant pressure your butt does! For peace of mind, I would get a doctor to look at it, even if it doesn’t hurt any more, so you can sleep easier.
I had to take Levonox injections in my abdomen because my blood level was too thin( I’m on Coumadin due to my artificial mechanical aortic valve) and Aortic torn aneurism.
Each injection resulted in a huge hematoma that ended up bruising my entire lower abdomen. I had to go to the hospital for 20 days because each hematoma bled into my lower abdomen.
The entire bottom of my abdomen was purple as a giant bruise and on the inside of my abdomen those bruises formed hard bleeding hematomas.
There was nothing they could do but admit me in-patient in the hospital.
I could rub my abdomen and feel each internal bleeding hematoma.
They said only resting until they start shrinking was the antidote. As the 20 days went each hematoma stopped bleeding and got smaller and sank lower in my abdomen until they disappeared and the external bruising went down.
But I still needed PT and OT because I spent so much time laying in bed I lost my ability to walk. I’m doing ok now and the bruising and hematomas are gone and I can walk with a cane.
I had one on my left buttock from a fall that took well over 6 months to go away. The doctor said not to worry about it. In fact, it disappeared so gradually that I didn't realize it was gone until I read your post. Hopefully, yours will do the same.
They do eventualy go away but mine were so big that it took almost 6 months to not notice anymore.
They had shrunk and were going lower into my abdomen and eventually they all went away. ( I had at least six of them)I don’t feel anything now.
While we’re on the subject of falling on our buttocks. I went to sit on the edge of the bed in the hospital and landed on my backbone after the bed moved because somebody forgot to lock it and it rolled backwards. I fell on my derrière and cracked my backbone and it’s never gone away. It’s milder now a few months later but I have to sit on each flank separetly as I can no longer sit and put pressure on it.
Yes I had 2 seperate Dr's look at the Hematoma and their biggest concern is they said to watch it and make sure it gets smaller and not bigger. If I showed you the bruise on my right side you would be shocked. It was bad bad bad taking up the whole right side of my butt purple blue the whole thing.
That's good news! When I looked again the bruise is no longer a half circle but just a small bruise now under the Hematoma. It is very very very gradually getting smaller I guess.
I'm so sorry to hear this! I hope you feel better in time, cracked backbones are very serious!
I only feel it if I’ve been sitting for a while. I find myself leaning to one side or the other. It doesn’t hurt. It’s achy and annoying sometimes. That’s why I pick the couch instead of a hard chair like a kitchen chair.
That’s when I notice it
I had a very aggressive lumbar fusion on 4/7. At my follow-up appointment I asked why both butt cheeks hurt and the surgeon whom I adore admitted they fixed a 58 year old injury which required some intensive handling. The pain is now gone but I have a hematoma on my right butt cheek near the surgical site. I've been icing but it's not getting smaller. Actually, I'm now getting occasional knife-like pains sometimes when I move my right leg. Thankfully it's not all the time. I'm still using a walker and not driving. I have no family in the area so I'd have to ask someone to take off work to take me. Uber and Lyft would be about $50 one way to schedule appointment with surgeon.
Anyone experience the sharp knife like pain in their hematoma? I do have lupus anticoagulant (not lupus, a blood clotting issue), but blood clots are warm and this is not.
