Creatine and non diabetic ckd

Posted by nimblefoot @nimblefoot, Mar 30, 2023

I was diagnosed with non diabetic ckd about 6 years ago. The only marker I have is age, I'm 78 years old and, according to my doctor I am in the top 1% in terms of fitness for people my age. I have hypophosphatemia, but well controlled with a supplement. My Egfr recently dropped from 64 to 59 and is of little concern since I know how to fix it.
I'm pretty much a gym rat and long distance hiker.
I am interested in supplementing my workouts with 2.5 gm of creatine monohydrate, but I understand it may be problematic considering my diagnosis. I am interested in what others may have to say about this, particularly if you are athletic with non diabetic ckd.
Thank you.

@nimblefoot Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. If I understand correctly, you are Stage 3A in kidney function, and would like to add creatine monohydrate to your supplements. While it may be a popular thing to do, here is what Mayo Clinic has to say about it: https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements-creatine/art-20347591#:~:text=Although%20an%20older%20case%20study,kidney%20function%20in%20healthy%20people. As you can see, in normally healthy people there shouldn't be any issue, but showing a chronic kidney issue, you might want to rethink this avenue. What does your nephrologist have to say about adding this supplement? What is your reason for wanting to add this powder to your supplements?

@nimblefoot I know you will ask a lot of questions, and take notes. That's always good. Remember, in general, we look at the trends in labwork, not a specific set of values. Your doctor may consider the labs today to be a baseline, or reference for you, and track you from there. And you'll read in our threads here, how important diet is in the rbgt5fv4ealm of chronic kidney disease. It can be a real balancing act, as what works at one point is not always going to be right at another time.

Please pop in and let me know how your appointment goes, okay?

I saw the neph and he says I do not have CKD (I'm just old🤣). No dietary restrictions, just don't be stupid). I offered to take him out for a beer🤣

@nimblefoot Did he take you up on that offer?! Are you relieved now, and will you follow his advice to "just don't be stupid"? Did he offer his thoughts on creatine?

I didn't really offer🤣
I am very relieved. My lunch ended up being a vegan wrap. No problem with creatine, but pay attention to protein, but no real limit set. I've been doing 60 gm a day for over 3 years, which really sucks with weight training.
