What supplements help Osteopenia, Osteoporosis?

Posted by grace1215 @grace1215, Feb 4, 2020

Hi, I am a new member here and wanted to find out if anyone has used AlgaeCal Plus & Strontium Citrate for Osteopenia? I have had this condition for 10 years now plus five years with Osteoarthritis of the hip which I am hoping will help not only my hip but the DEXA scan came up with Osteopenia scores.

It is calcium carbonate, same substance regardless of where it came from…red algae, green algae, or sources on land.

Hi @wendyi. I noticed you are interested in connecting with others on a supplement, so you will notice I have moved your post here:

Members @yanice @lom13 and @parrotqueen have all shared some information on the supplement and may be able to come back in to share more with you.

Are you currently taking algeacal?

@milkweed can you clarify your post on gains with calcium and D3, by telling us whether you have osteopenia or osteoporosis, and how severe the latter might be?

My Dexa scan puts me at -2.5 but I have hip replacements so the ideal area is not included. I have had 6 stress fractures in 2 years. My clinical diagnosis is osteopenia but because of my he SFs I have had my first shot of Prolia. I’ve taken calcium and but D3 as described during this 2 year period and realized a slight gain from -2.6. The truth is after you stop taking HRT you should be out in an osteoporosis meds. It’s under treated in general.

I started taking Algaecal since it comes from a food source. The other calcium supplements are made from rock. I take 3 a day, one at each meal as our bodies cannot absorb too much calcium at one time for a total of 725 mg per day. I make up the remaining mg to get to 1200 mg per day from food as much as possible, ricotta cheese, black sesame seeds, sheep milk yogurt, sardines or canned salmon with bones, and vegetables high in calcium. Plus I take an Ultra K2 and Vitamin D3.

I have been taking AlgaeCal and Strontium Boost for a couple of months now. I won’t be able to have a bone density test until October but I have experienced less aches and pains in my back. I had been on prednisone for 6 months due to Polymyalgia Rumatica and my bone density went down by 8%. That condition has also resolved during the time I’ve been taking AlgaeCal but, of course, I can’t say it’s a direct cause-and-effect.
I highly recommend the book Healthy Bones Healthy You by Pizzarno and Pizzarno. A lot of excellent research based information!
