I was diagnosed with diverticulitis

Posted by Jenny D @jenniferedodd, Mar 22, 2014

I was diagnosed in Jan w diverticulitis. Cipro & Flagyl round. It returned with vengeance 6 weeks later as peritonitis. IV antibiotics in hospital 5 days ...flagyl & cipro again. Dr said I must undergo colon surgery to remove. After research I am willing b'cause I don't want antibiotic resistance. Question is how do I stay clear of inflammation/infection to get ready for surgery in 4 weeks?

Hello @nosurgery

How are you feeling these days? I hope you are doing well and feel more certain about the type of decision you should make in the future. Will you post again when you have made a decision?

I feel better. I found what works for me as far as food. Lots of fiber is key.
I need surgery, electively.
Need to find the right person at the right place.

Good to hear from you again, @nosurgery. I am glad that you found a diet that works well for you. That is an important factor in treating diverticulitis.

Hi @nosurgery
I was thinking about you and just wondering if you were still feeling better.

I've been miserable. So much abdominal discomfort. The last 8 days have not been good. I know I have to do something, surgery, at some point.

I'm really sorry to hear that you are experiencing a lot of discomfort again, @nosurgery.

I don't recall if you said this before: Have you already had a CT scan of the abdomen or a colonoscopy?

I had a colonoscopy in feb., I was told to increase fiber had some divertic. I instagated the colonoscopy because of new constipation over the last 2 years. After colonoscopy I was sick as a dog. Call dr that did procedure. Told her of distended and., chills, stomach ache and could not eat. She said I probably had flu. It happened again in July. Went to ER. Same exact S+S. Had CT SCAN. Showed microperforation! In hospital for 4 days. Got 2 opinions from surgeons. Also have over the last couple of years developed sharp left Lowe quad. Discomfort. A colicky pain that I had to rush to ER. Only relief was with morphine. Nobody know what it is. Is it connected? Had Ct and ultrasound? Told maybe abdominal wall defect or a stitch from other hernia surgery.... so I don't know what's exactly going on, but I'm not jumping to do anything. As it turns out, so far today is a good day...
Also asked earlier if I take anyone to appointments and yes I do, with the exception of 1. My husband goes with me. Today I have appoint with my nephrologist. I see a new gi person in a few weeks to see if the can help me sort it all out. I called Mayo fo appointment but it's tough to get all the files and get insurance to pay and then fly out from Boston. A little overwhelming. So that's it. This to shall pass.. you asked, so there it is!

I hope your appointment went well with the nephrologist today, @nosurgery. I'm glad that today was a better day for you. Not rushing to do anything and getting another GI opinion is probably a good idea. Boston has a lot of good medical facilities, which one are you going to?
Will you keep in touch and let me know how you are doing?

After many consults, I have decided best to have sigmoid colectomy. Anyone with experience with this?

@nosurgery
I have had 4 surgeries this past year that started with diverticulitis. Jan 2018 surgery to remove part of sigmoid. Had temporary colostomy for 6 months, then reversal surgery. The reversal went as planned, but ended up with obstruction in an bowel, went home after 17 days and another surgery that was unsuccessful to clear SBO,with PICC line on TPN. Things began clearing and was on low fiber diet when diverticulitis hit again late Nov. ER visit and antibiotics. 2 weeks later, back in ER, admitted with bad blockage at reversal site. Went home after 6 days on only clear liquids. Was on clears for almost a month and had another enema with contrast that showed blockage was worse. Had 4th surgery 7th 2019 and ended up with Deloyers procedure which removed all sigmoid/descending colon, part of transverse and part of my rectum. The transverse is now my new descending and 2 months out everything seems to be working great. I actually had popcorn at the movies recently and am fine. I can honestly say I think I am much better off without the sigmoid. I have heard that it takes a while to feel "normal" again and I am looking forward to that.
I hope things go well for you! If you have any questions about diet, etc please feel free to reach out
