Posted by tmauko @tmauko, Aug 26, 2022

Hello, my name is Tanja and I am just wondering if anyone has been diagnose with pleural effusion due to lung cancer. If so, how was it treated? Just wondering, I am requesting a second opinion through Mayo, loosing confidence in my doctors here in Toronto. Thank you

Hello. I am sorry you are going thru this. I felt better after each if my thoracentesis but it wasn't so much related to nerve pain, just a big relief . It takes some time to really resolve. I'm at 9 months post surgery and still have soreness.

Thanks for answering me. I just keep thinking that my pain is abnormal. I thought that after 7 weeks the pain would subside. I appreciate knowing that I need to be patient. I’ve been really feeling sorry for myself today.

I am 7 weeks into my recovery for a VATS lobectomy of my right lower lung. I’ve been in some terrible nerve pain that doesn’t seem to go away. I was recently told I have fluid in the lining of my lung and am scheduled for a thorocentesis. I was wondering whether my pain will subside after it is drained?

I had a thoracentesis after experiencing sharp pain sand coughing and they removed a liter of fluid. This allowed me to breathe better and the pain subsided. The process is less painful than getting novocaine at the dentist. There were some sharp pains right after the procedure and for several hours on and off as my lung expanded to fill the space left by the withdrawn fluid. Hope it works for you; nerve pain is not fun.

Hi, I've been searching for answers and decided to ask anyone out there. My husband was diagnosed with a carsinoid lung tumour typical. They said it was benign. He had a Pet scan and the tumour was contained. This tumour was removed with a lung resection with the lower lobe removed in Oct 2022. Now 7 months later he has a plural effusion on the same lung which showed up on an x-ray. 1 litre was drained last week and was a dark blood colour. He Is short of breath and coughing. We are waiting of the testing of the fluid. What would cause this 7 months later? Could it be Trauma from the operation or could this be that they're other cancer cells or another tumour? thanks

Hi Hei @hei59, You are likely not finding conclusive answers, because there are many reasons that this type of fluid may build up. Only the results of the fluid tests, and possibly a CT scan will answer those questions. I know the waiting is very difficult, and it's easy to let your mind run to the worst-case scenarios, but we don't know that this is cancer.
Did the x-ray show any areas of concern, other that the fluid (IE. masses)?
Did the doctors give you an idea of how long the fluid analysis would take?

10 months after VAT surgery on right lung, I developed significant pain when taking deep breath, shortness of breath and went to ER. They did a CT scan and said I had pleurisy. I chose to wait before doing a thoracentesis since my pulmonologist was out of town. It resolved itself and they think it was just some kind of infection,

Hi,
thanks so much for your reply. The X-ray did not show anything else, no masses. He has just had a CT scan today, still waiting for results, the fluid analysis was supposed to be one week, it's now been 2 weeks and no answers yet. I am trying patiently to wait for results and keep my mind in check ( challenging) but will let you know.
kind regards

Also meant to say, We are in New Zealand with a very overloaded, understaffed public health care system hence the delay in results, super frustrating.

I know it is hard to wait! Some types of analysis require more time.
