Correct, both my parents suffer from dry Mac degeneration so I think my doc who had both my parents as patients felt I should be on them as well. Only take meds for what ails you otherwise it unnecessarily stresses the liver. Gratefully, Marianne
I’ve gotten cramping and diarrhea from AREDS. I’ve considered taking it only once a day, since I generally need smaller than usual doses of most medications.

Even once a day was too much for me. It took me about a year to suspect the AREDS because, at first, the symptoms were only once 6-8 weeks, then once every two weeks, then a couple of times a week. By then I was sure I had some terrible disease. By then, I was only taking the AREDS in the morning with breakfast. Swallowing pills is very difficult for me and I just couldn't make myself take it at night. I felt nauseous at just the thought of it even though I didn't know it was that pill that was making me sick. A pattern started to emerge. I would wake up feeling fine, take my AREDS with breakfast, then about an hour or so after that, I'd have a sudden onset of terrible stomach pain and terrible diarrhea that could last just a couple of hours, or 24 hours. I took my last AREDS on December 18, 2022 and haven't had an episode since.

I've stopped taking the AREDS as well. I'll be printing out this article below and giving it to both my optometrist (who first diagnosed my AMD and asks me every time I see her if I'm taking my AREDS), and my retina specialist, who also asks me about the AREDS, the next time I see them. https://www.cureamd.org/best-eye-vitamins-macular-degeneration/

Thanks for the excellent article by Dr Chris Knobbe. I wonder how many read the entire article and absorbed the information about the dire consequences of our western diet throughout the world.
What I don’t see in all the comments posted are many references to diet. My eye Doctor told me many years to consume as much leafy greens as possible. I had changed my diet years ago to avoid as much sugar and refined flour and processed foods as possible. He also told me to take Areds2 which I did. I currently am taking one daily and plan to stop. I have also stopped some other vitamins and aim to get as much omega 3 and a rainbow color of vegetables daily…heavy on the leafy greens. I will continue to take some vitamins for my osteoporosis. My eyesight is precious to me. I have early onset dry MD in both eyes which has progressed very very little over the past 20 plus years. I have no organic problems and take no meds.
I certainly wouldn’t take any vitamin that upset my system no matter what my doctor said. So I can agree with those who chose to stop although I never experienced any side effects. There’s no magic cure in the multi billion dollar vitamin industry.
Until people realize that most of our major illness are diet related and change is essential to our well being, Big Pharma will continue to profit from our desire for a quick fix. Vitamins are not regulated and I have no love for the FDA who can’t get even keep up with all the supplements on the market today.
I may have gone off topic a tad but I am happy to read that people are researching and why they chose to discontinue this particular vitamin .
Now think long and hard about your own diet and where it could improve and what foods would help you the most and educate your Doctors on your choices.

Yes, its a long article and well worth the read. But I doubt many people read it. I just wanted to put it out there anyway. It really resonates with me. But ours is a culture in which we've been conditioned to believe that pills treat everything.

Totally agree with you Mary. I am in a nutritarian study reserved for 100 participants. It will take all of 1 year to collect data on us, however it is being done with a control group eating the SAD Diet AKA standard American diet‼️
I’m curious about the people in the SAD control group. Do you know if they have always eaten that way or if this will be a new way of eating for them. I am assuming everyone has been assessed medically for any underlying conditions.
I remember a documentary on a young healthy man who decided to eat fast food for a month and super sized everything for his 3 meals a day. He barely made it to the end and the doctors said it would take years for some of the damage that was done to his organs to reverse to his prior state…including his vision, if they did. And no, there were no amount of vitamins he could take to speed things along.

So do the AREDS help?
