Body making too much Vitamin B6

Posted by granolamama @granolamama, Feb 15, 2019

I had many labs done this week in an attempt to figure out why I am dealing with chronic muscle and joint pain, and severe exhaustion and weakness. The results came back showing that my B6 (normal range is 2-20) is 116. I do take one supplement each evening, and my doctor said it’s far less than she even takes, and in no way would account for such a number. She is completely confused, saying she has never seen such a thing, and couldn’t even come up with any info on it. She will spend some time meeting with other doctors this weekend to brain storm.
I’m wondering if anyone has experienced this, or has any info. I am googling like a mad woman, and the only info I can find is about people taking too much B6 in supplement form, and the dangers of it in their system. Nothing whatsoever about a person’s body making too much. Ideas?

Hello @cindi045, Welcome to Connect. If your B6 test level was 24, I think that is the normal range according to what I've read. Here's some information on the topic.

"What is the normal range for vitamin B6? - Reference range is 5 to 50 ug/L. The Food and Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies used a plasma pyridoxal-5-phosphate level of 5 ug/L (20 nmol/L) as the major indicator of adequacy to calculate the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for adults." --- Vitamin B6: http://www.clinlabnavigator.com/vitamin-b6.html

Have you discussed it with your doctor?

Responding to Granolamama . I know that your post was a while ago okay years ago LOL. I am wondering what you have found out since as my daughter has toxic B6 levels but does not take any supplements. Her doctor has basically told her there's nothing they can do and if not given her any suggestions and she's having more and more problems. I would love to hear from you. A concerned mother

I have the same thing happening - very high B6 but I am not supplementing. I started to get the pins and needles sensation a few months ago which spurred the blood test. I am considered very healthy otherwise. My doctor, nutritionist, and naturopath are at a loss. Naturopath thinks the liver is possibly not detoxing on its own properly so I am holding onto the B6, yet we still don’t know why. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? Any progress for you?

It seems doctors don’t have a lot of experience with high B6. My level was 105 on the blood test with 50 as the high end so I stopped taking the supplement immediately. My neurologist said if my PN symptoms didn’t improve after stopping then it’s not the B6. It’s been 3 weeks since I stopped and symptoms have worsened. He is going to do more tests. Not sure what else it could be. Does anyone have experience quitting B6 with any subsequent improvement or worsening of symptoms?

I did take a cocktail of B vitamins for PN for a while, which was helpful. The. I had to stop due to costs, and the PN got much worse again so I returned to just a few - B6 being one of them. After a couple of months it was still as bad, and I then found out you can cause toxicity issues from high levels, however the symptoms of this is PN - how helpful is that, eh??? So I then stopped them again, and eventually- like after a couple of months, the PN died down. I take Magnesium and Calcium (Osteocare) and also B12 and B9 and Zinc, and so far, all is quiet on the PN front. I've know idea if this is helpful to you, but at least you know that too much B6, is indeed a 'thing'.

I have High B6 as well. I don’t take a multi-vitamin, B-complex or B6. I don’t eat a lot of foods high in B6 like bananas. My doctors don’t seem to have any answer nor enough alarm to find the cause. But I do have numbness in my feet and ankles and my fingers. I also get Raynaud’s in the winter where my fingers turn blue. My balance is not good. I’m thinking I have some type of neuropathy. I read this could also be a problem with the kidneys or liver not clearing it out. I have an overactive bladder from my Parkinson’s(PD) but no other symptoms of kidney malfunction. My diagnosis has been revised recently from PD to MSA.

Doctors are mostly at a loss when you have a high level of any vitamin. I had been put on 50,000 units of vitamin D a week for many years. Then I begin a complete body rash I turned red even in my eyes and it to several weeks to figure out it was the vitamin D. I stopped all the D for a couple of years and now have started on a over the counter D.

I may have found a clue: get your phosphorus blood level checked. According to my doctor, there can be a high B6 level reading if your phosphorus is low. Do you take antacids? I’ve taken one every night for years. It was just part of my bedtime routine. Calcium carbonate binds phosphorus so you can’t absorb it. She also said to check parathyroid hormone levels as well.

My daughter is high in b6. Her body is producing it, not from supplements. Have you discovered what caused your body to do this. Her bloodwork..B6 came back it is at 203 but normal range is 2.1 to 21.7

My b6 is 46 and my tests say tip of range is 21. I don't eat, drink or supplement b6. I've controlled all variables. I can eat only 600 calories per WEEK making sure to avoid b6 foods and still high. The only other option is to stop eating completely.
