I have been cancer free since 2014 .. and what you all said about swallowing getting stuff stuck... it don't get better ..now im having other bad issues. Thats why im in these groups.. scar tissue so bad in my neck I need my cartroid arteries fixed and unblocked but , almost everywhere I went said its not possible so if I'm going to die from strokes etc and if they would have told me all the possible side effects then / now ... I would never of had any cancer treatments to further all of the medical issues I got from the treatments. Then they tell me im able to work don't get no help.

2 ReactionsI have had my throat stretched many times, but I do not have an esophageal problem. My problem is an ENT issue above the Adams Apple where the radiation was done that has caused severe swallowing problems from the scar tissue from radiation. My Doctors are recommending a feeding tube, which I am trying to avoid ! They said the only thing I can do is speech therapy exercises to help some !
I had a squamous cell cancer of the tonsil in 1995. I had chemo and 35 rounds of radiation that took care of the cancer. I have been dealing with a severe swallowing problem from scar tissue from the radiation that started about 7 years ago, and today I am trying to stay off of a feeding tube, which my Doctors are recommending me to do. I have to blend all my meals to eat ! I am looking for ways to break up this scar tissue. Doctors don't have any answers !
@jrr2253, have you tried speech therapy and seen a speech pathologist?

1 ReactionI am so sorry. So very very sorry for what your husband and you are going through. There seems to be a shortage of knowledgeable doctors out there, especially those who deal with head, neck, thyroid etc. I spoke to a "regular" oncologist once and told him he needed to brush up on thyroid cancer because it was the up and coming cancer. I never saw him again. Oncologists seem to be able to handle all cancers but those concerning the neck. I had a total thyroidectomy and neck dissection in 2012 with RAI treatment two months later. My life has never been the same. I suffered from laryngeal spasms which lock your throat. It took years before I found ONE ent who knew how to stop them. You breathe through your nose and swallow and it breaks the "lock" on your throat !! I have been spreading the word since. I now have a permanently paralyzed vocal cord nerve which for three months made me sound like Minnie Mouse until I accidentally found out that oxycodone relaxed the muscles in my throat and gave me my voice back. That was 11 years ago. I fight every month to get my 5mg 3x/day to take with meals so I can swallow. Doctors nowadays are know-it-all's who know nothing. I also have CLL leukemia. When I finally started meds for that it decreased my nodes everywhere but my throat, which enlarged !!! I have a hole in my heart. They wanted me to have it closed with a device. I, like it sounds like your husband does, scar badly inside my body. I said to the heart surgeon "what happens when my scar tissue starts covering the device and it gets heavier and heavier on my heart ? I've read what has to be done to get the device out. You end up taking part of the heart. Do I want the procedure? No. I'll live with the hole like I have for 68 years " Yet each doctor keeps pushing and pushing me. Unfortunately people don't listen to their bodies. We know them the best. When we are scared we turn to the "experts" expecting them to know what to do. My experience has been that they actually have no clue.
My advice, for what it's worth, is to take your husband to the Mayo Clinic or Johns Hopkins for evaluation. For some reason, and I've never been to either of them, I feel they are the best!
Once again I'm sorry for what they put your husband through. I am furious!!! I advocate so much for myself that I tell people just give me a prescription pad and I will take care of myself, ordering the right tests, labs etc.
Doctors have to stop "practicing" medicine and actually DO it!!
Hi, I know exactly what you're saying.. they want to treat us but, dont want to deal with what happens later. Im with you.i did get the heart surgery to replace every valve in my heart. Now with all of the scar tissue in my neck I need the cartoid arteries fixed and no doctor will touch me. So that's why I'm headed to mayo clinic. But, I will say if they would have been honest with me I would of just let the cancer take its course instead of having all these other medical issues. And if mayo clinic can't help I will die from scar tissue on my cartroid arteries.

1 ReactionOh my 🥺🥺. This is why I fight and fight and had to change cardio's like three times because they didn't want to talk about anything else but the surgery !! I walk in and say "it's off the table. Don't talk about the heart surgery cos it ain't gonna happen." I was FaceTiming with the surgeon and as I talked about how bad I scar internally, I saw his shoulder move and he glanced down and I knew he was writing lol and then he said even if i wanted it in the future, he wouldn't do it. He's no fool. I saved HIM lol. Inwas told by a radiologist that the scarring in my neck from thyroidectomy left thick ropey scarring in my bed. 11 years ago and I still suffer. I doctor myself. I know myself. The steroid increased my wbc and pushed me over the edge of bad hypothyroidism. I need to start steroid session again as the swelling is back (I'm pretty sure it's lupus 🙁) so I already added another thyroid pill to my schedule because I went out of control and it was awful. If doctors won't treat me I will treat myself. I've had everything for so long. Now husband is sick. I hope it's not Covid because between the leukemia and the steroids, my immune system is shot (although I sort of feel that my rise in WBC is helping fight the cold or Covid off, or whatever it is.). I hope you get a positive answer from Mayo. Remember the ultimate decision will lie with you, regarding the possible outcome - being realistic, I'm sorry. Make the choice yours and choose the best doctor and what will be, will be. ❤️😊👍🏻🤞🏻

3 ReactionsYou got that right !!! 😆
I finished 28 sessions of each weekday radiation last Tuesday 7/18/23, and I have had that problem since week 4. I lost my voice after week 3. I do have choking and coughing fits. I take mucinex whether it works or not I’m not sure.
I’m sorry for your experience but it does help to find that your not alone. And I agree it better than being on the wrong side of the ground.
