Does Mayo Clinic use stem cell therapy for neuropathic issues? Have any of you tried stem cell therapy?

@1puttman

Has anyone had experience with treating neuropathy numbness with Platelet rich plasma injections or stem cell injections to repair or regenerate nerve cells which are severely damaged ??

Hi 1puttman, I have PN in my feet. All the types of pain that are mentioned show up at times. That being said I tried both. About 8 years ago, I flushed $10,000 down the toilet for stem cells by a pretty successful con artist who has his own radio show in the New York area. As for PRP injections, About 3 years ago, I had my pain management Dr. do it. There are several shots involved and one actually did some damage on the top of my right foot. Must have hit a nerve. It has gotten better over time. In any case, it did nothing for my PN pain, absolutely nothing.

Thanks, Julkin !! That's about the input that i am getting. Such a shame that so many so called "professionals" are finding ways to get rich from other peoples' misery. Would be OK if it worked, but NO!

There are a lot of the chiropractor clinics that claim to "cure" neuropathy but I'm not aware of anyone who has received stem cell therapy that fixed their neuropathy symptoms. Back in August of 2018 we had a guest speaker who has done a lot of research on stem cell therapy at the Minnesota Neuropathy Association. I took notes and a lot of links on his talk and while some of the information was hopeful, I don't believe there have been any breakthroughs yet.

Speaker: William Hoffman of the U of M Medical School
Topic: Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine: A Revolution Picks Up the Pace

I guess I would do a little research of the science involved that the chiropractor is using. You might find this handbook helpful also.

Thanks, John. I plan to attend the session just to see what is being "touted". I figure that it's just another semi-scam. What a shame !

We are also bombarded buy creams and other things to use on our feet. Nothing really works. PN is such a horror that they know we will try anything for relief.

Back in August, I asked this question about stem cell therapy, because a local Dr and his wife in a joint practice with no other physicians, offer stem cell treatments that they claim will regenerate the nerve cells. They tell you up front that insurance does not cover any of it and the full course of treatment over approx six months cost $13,000 - CASH.
Needless to say I've had my doubts and declined further contact.

I tried stem cells last week. Injections in the bottom of my feet.
Didn’t feel a thing. Almost.
Hard to say if anything is different/better. No arch shock therapy if you know what I mean.

Hello @azgolfore and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Thanks for joining to share about your recent experience with your stem cell injection last week. I wanted to help connect you with others who are sharing about their stem cell experience, so you will notice I have moved your post into this discussion:

How long until your doctor felt you may start to see some effects of the injection?

The only way stem cells work is if you mean to increase the bank account of the doctor. I paid 10,000 dollars 8 years ago. A con job to desperate people. Hope you get better.

I have been diagnosed with a nummular persistent daily headache I have tried everything for pain and taking large doses of gabapentin. Some days are ok but others excruciating I am considering stem cell as a last resort. Any info on this kind of neuropathy?

Hello @rozmuhr, Welcome to Connect. I was not familiar with the nummular headache and after reading more about it I can understand what kind of pain you must be going through. I'm hoping other members that may have the same diagnosis see your post and are able to share some suggestions. Here's what I found on this condition:
