being cleerly blocked

70 yr old male. Had a widowmaker 12/19, stented. presently Ldl 45, ApoB 47, tri 69, bp 114/70 so numbers excellent. Calcium score paid out of pocket/cardiologist refused to order, 898. I want to know my at risk soft plaque status.
Want the Cleerly test, cardiologist refuses to order "won't change treatment". Its info I want, fu. Regular provider refuses doesn't want to piss off cardiologist.
Local imaging center has a work around, requires an additional $800 expense for outside doctor to rx and interpret. The money means nothing, the attempt to force me into paying it means everything, so I am trying to figure out a way to switch cardiologists to one who will rx (wont be covered by insurance but imaging center requires an order).
So any ideas how to cardiologist shop within my Humana Medicare HMO? Tried to get office practice manage to call me, no luck.

Consumer reports is wrong in my case. Louisville is a small town, I often get same day appts for specialists-same day I said. I am covered for emergencies while traveling and I dont need a medigap plan.
Appreciate the insight though, personal experience is often the best example we can find.
Now, if I need to get top notch Mayo-clinic care I agree with your coverage 100%.

I know this probably won't be helfpful but only advice I can offer is get rid of Humana...had a medicare advantage plan two separte years, their web site purpose built to discourage users and their 'support staff' from accessing info.. Experience with Humana's only covered dental 'plan' was a sweet heart deal between Humana and provider that ignored coverages and left policy holder to go it alone to recover bogus co-pays.

If you have medicare advantage you have until March 31 to switch insurance provider.

I live in a rural county and for some reason AARP doesn't offer their United Healthcare advantage plans in my zip code. They offer everything else and advertise heavily on over the air TV but won't offer their product...really takes my opinion of AARP down a few notches.

not sure of their coverage area .. I'm in Fl so lots of "retired" old folks here more than likely a good market for them .. I would go with a decent ppo if you can it gives you a bit more control of your healthcare ..

i agree 100% on the website is a pos. I never use it. I call in if there is an issue (very rarely) and escalate to supervisor. US based csrs, no issues.
I get 2 flu shots per year-and I use both 1 late august 1 91 days later.
I get free teeth cleaning twice a year.
I have used the mail order rx a few times, no issues.
Thanks for the very informative post, I will consider firing the whole bunch due to my cardiologist refusing my wishes and now his office manager not returning or taking my calls. F' em.

Medicare Advantage is a byproduct (?) of Medicare. The insurer gets your premiums from Medicare, and in exchange offers a plan and administers it, according to rules set by Medicare.

There needs to be some kind of care network(s) near you for this to work, either HMO groups or Preferred Provider Organization(s) that encompass primary docs, specialists, hospitals and outpatient care.

Each insurer determines the zip codes where a product is offered, and only offer in areas that have those services. In rural areas with a few primary care docs and a small hospital or two, where you must travel many miles for specialty care, these networks don't exist, so Advantage Plans usually aren't offered.

Remember the insurers -United, Humana, Blue Cross - need to break even on these plans to stay in business, so they only offer them where they can deal with a few networks, not dozens of individual businesses. AARP is simply a reseller or agent and has no control over which Zip Codes are included.

I know that doesn't get you the Advantage Plan you would like to have, but at least I hope it clarifies how the coverage areas are determined.
