Rezum for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

Posted by scwhandyman @scwhandyman, Jan 26, 2020

I am 66 years old and have been diagnosed with BPH. I tried Alfuzosin unsuccessfully. My urologist recommended Urolift, but I have concerns about the procedure. Previously he had mentioned Rezum for prostates between 30 and 90 ml. Mine is 28 ml and he did not think this would be a problem. He is a younger doctor and this is a relatively new procedure. I expressed concern that since the procedure kills cells with steam would there be a danger of damaging the urethra, too much prostate, or the outer cover of the prostate. He said this would not happen. I have looked on line for resources that address this issue without success. Any assistance getting assurance that the doctor is correct is appreciated.

Hello,
Instead of me jabbering on and on about how I understand the procedure, here is an informative video. It's about 30 minutes long.

Take care,
Jake

@scwhandyman, it seems like you're looking for more indepth information. Here is a clinical review that provides an overview of the technique and evaluation of its safety and efficacy.

Dutesteride did not work for me. I opted for the Urolift and it was a waste of time. The option is now Rezum or Green Light (HoLEP). Any thoughts?

Where is the gold standard for getting answers on REZUM? Size of prostate, age pre post expectations etc etc.

Pablo,
According to this web information:
- Treatment for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) – Rezum https://prostatematters.co.uk/treatments-for-bph-and-where-to-get-them/treatment-for-bph-rezum/
REZUM treatment is "indicated for men 50 years and older with a prostate volume of ≥ 30cm3 and ≤80cm3. The Rezūm System is also indicated for treatment of prostate with hyperplasia of the central zone and/or a median lobe."

And in the fine print at the bottom of the company's website on this page:
https://www.rezum.com/home.html
The Rezūm System is intended to relieve symptoms, obstructions, and reduce prostate tissue associated with BPH. It is indicated for men ≥ 50 years of age with a prostate volume 30cm3 ≤ 80cm3. The Rezūm System is also indicated for treatment of prostate with hyperplasia of the central zone and/or a median lobe.

I had a urolift 2 years ago and all well till 12/8/22. Lot of blood when peeing. ER said a possibility of a mass in my prostate. Urologist did the scope but couldn’t be sure. Quickly did a TURP/TURB with several biopsy’s to check for cancer. NO CANCER!! Did a another scope to see why so much pain. It’s due to turp & biop. This Wednesday I am having the REZUM procedure. NOT looking forward to this again. You know, the pain, cath, and the worse of all the damn spasms!! Had many spasms after turp. I’m told all will be well after the Renuz. I am 68 with underlying health problems. Otherwise in fair health. Wish me luck. L W
