Non arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy

I am glad you got a diagnosis, even though it is a very worrisome one for you. Now that you know, a visit or referral - sooner rather than later - to a Neuro ophthalmologist is your next step - can be hard to find except in a larger metro area, but my friend saw one for a related optic neurotic, and regained some of he damaged vision. This is also the place to get advice about protecting your other eye.

Hi all. 5 days ago I woke up with pain in my eye, and felt like electricity in my vision when looking left to right and up and down. I thought it would go away on its own. I went to a ophthalmologist he checked my eyes and said the exam is normal and my vision disturbance is coming from lack oxygen. He said he didn’t know the cause. It was driving me insane that the lower left part of my vision in my left eye felt gone. I went to a big hospital they did a complete work up on me. They first suspected optic neuritis. But after an mri and the optic nerve not being swollen on the back side they ruled out, MS as well and I was diagnosed with NAION and given discharge papers. After reading all these threads I am not alone. I am a 41 year old male in good health. The way I can explain it is my eye had a “stroke” and the end results are permanent with no treatment. Very nerve racking and a hard pill to swallow. Does anyone have any help on how or what to take to save my other eye from this happening? I really need the support and thank you in advance.

I lost vision in my left eye last month. I went to Mayo and was told it was NAION. I am still in the learning stage. I don't have any of the risk factors except I have no cup on either eye. My ratio was 10: 0.0 . I am following up with my doctor for a sleep study. I don't think I have sleep apnea but I figure the only way to know is to do the study. How may here have low or no disc to cup ratios?

What led your doctor to order a sleep study?

Hello,I am unofficially diagnosed yet but one doctor told me I may have had an eye stroke. I will be seeing a neuro opthamologist in a couple weeks and from what I have read, I fit a lot of the factors from NAION. May I ask what some of your symptoms are? I had a routine yearly eye exam and my opthamologist told me my optic nerve was swollen. After a normal CT and normal inflammatory markers, I have not had any vision loss, just some momentary kaleidoscope vision. I assume I prob need an MRI of the brain and eye orbits. Any thoughts or similar circumstances? Thank you.

Hello, @wpoints I'm Scott and I had a stroke, which lodged in one of my eyes. I lost all the sight in that eye so I am pleased to read you have had no vision impairment or loss!

Before my stroke, for years. I had kaleidoscopic or prismatic effects in my eyes and was told they were visionary migraines. They lasted from a few minutes to an hour or more. Other than that I had no symptoms. It just came on out of the blue as I was told stokes so often do. All this said I was not diagnosed with NAION.
