Anyone had a problem with scar tissue post liver transplant?

Posted by ltek128 @ltek128, Sep 9, 2022

Hi , I would like to ask if anyone has had a problem with scar tissue post liver transplant? I had a liver transplant 6/3/22 at Mt. Sinai in NYC. Following surgery I had quite a bit of ascites draining from the incision then developed a surgical site incision and developed a seroma. The seroma was drained and now the incision has healed very unsightly with pulling on the right hand side. Surgeon has referred me to see a plastic surgeon for a scar revision which I’m seeing next week.
My hepatologist told me no surgery for a year! Anyone have similar experiences?
Thanks

I have had no problems with my incision but regarding surgery, I was waiting to get a knee replacement and my team told me to wait for six months after my transplant. I ended up waiting a year, I just didn't want to be back in the hospital again yet at six months. Of course your surgery is different being where they cut you open for your transplant.

I hope you are able to get your surgery soon. While waiting the incision may actually improve too possibly negating the necessity of surgery.

@ltek128, what did you learn from the plastic surgeon?

I had scar tissue at the top of my incision right under the breath bone. It started pulling on me. My team told me to massage it every day, which I did. It hurt a little to do it, but it broke it up. I also put vitamin e oil on my incision and that helped it to not look so unslightly. I did not have drainage, so I am not sure if that makes a difference. Good luck to you!!

He wasn’t very optimistic.
He said because of the immunosuppressive meds and being a diabetic definitely interferes with my healing. He did say to follow up in 6 months to see where we are at.
So until then I will keep up with my walking and healing !
Thanks for asking !!

Overtime it will fade. I’m 15 years out from liver transplant. The scar is huge and has a few pits in it. But I love it! It tells a part of my life story. Something that I had to fight and overcome. And now, I live ! You’ll get used to it and it tells your story too. Enjoy your life!!

I absolutely love to hear that LT patients that are out so far with their new liver. I am almost 2 years and I am so encouraged that I am going to be around for a while. You are always scared it will reject.
I do have a questions for u how much immunosuppressants are you on, how often do you get labs, and do you still see your liver doc. Also how are your kidneys doing.
Again 15 years , wonderful😊💚
I like what u said about your scar to, I think about mine and my donor family when I look at mine. I am so very grateful. Living my best life also!

Hi, @myfablife
I was six years out from my transplant on the 23rd. I am only on one immunosuppressant. I was also taking a very small dose of prednisone until about 6 months or so ago but I no longer take that.

I go for labs every 2 months. So far, so good.

From what my doctors tell me, don't worry about rejection. They have seen that many times and know how to handle it. I have never had any problems since my transplant with anything related to it so I have been very fortunate.

Hi
I have blood work done once a month. I see my liver Dr every year. I take 1mg of Tac in the morning and at night. My kidneys took quite a hit before my transplant. My kidneys are stage 3A. I see my Kidney Dr every 3 months. They are/ have been stable. The Tac is hard on the body especially the kidneys. Also as life goes on you will probably have various growths on your body. I see a Dermatologist twice a year to be checked and have “things” burnt off. I have my first skin cancer on my forehead this month. Mohls surgery next week. I stay out of the sun because I burn very easy. Life is good. Appreciate it every day.

I don’t mind answering questions. Wishing you the best of health!

U r so very helpful to me. I take the same tac as you + myfortic. My kidney have been watched closely to. Right now they are stable never in the normal range.
I do go to the derm once a year so far. I spend a lot of time outdoors but I do cover up.
As you appreciate each and everyday.
Continue best of health to u and w/the monks surgery to😊🦋
