Help! Anyone with Post COVID get infected again?

Posted by kellyhart @kellyhart, Jun 15, 2022

Hello! Newbie here. Here’s a little backstory:
COVID April 2020
Moderna vaccine Jan-March 2021
COVID May 17, 2022

Other neuro history: concussion July 2020; balance issues and numbness / tingling post pardum in 2008. Tested for MS but nothing showed up.

March of 2021 was the start of me slowly declining. My diagnosis came in the fall after many tests and consults, as a diagnosis of exclusion really, as we were all just starting to hear about long COVID. Cognitive issues, hearing issues, balance issues, ears ringing, sensitivity to heat where it felt like my ears would fill up and I’d get confused/ acted drunk with slurred speech. I got weaker and weaker. Couldn’t drive, I’d hit a few things it was crazy. I’d walk into my daughters volleyball game and get completely overloaded sensory wise and feel as if I was losing my balance. I’d get quiet snd confused. Numbness and tingling. Very very slow processing.

The recovery from COVID again has been scary. I was given the anti viral which helped me recover symptom wise acutely but the fatigue as bd brain fog has been awful. I’m back to work with shorter days and slowly trying to get it together. But now symptoms of last summer are slowly creeping back in. Headaches, ear/ jaw pain, I fell on Sunday. My legs just have out. My legs are burning and weak walking the halls at work. My breathing is a little better but I still have trouble.

I’m trying to get an appointment at a long COVID clinic. This is all so scary. Any tips/ advice?
Since last year I’m on some supplements to boost my immunity. 2 inhalers. 3 medications for heart/ blood pressure. And now I feel like I took one step forward snd 2 steps back.

Has anyone had long haulers twice?
Has anyone experienced it after the vaccine?

Thank you. My tongue still feels like I burnt it on hot coffee. That was my first symptom when getting sick April 2020. And all my other symptoms they documented. Somehow my provider said the Moderna is 10x stronger than Pfizer? They think since I most likely had the first strain of COVID (strong) then the moderna, it was too much on my body.

Welcome @khonda. It was only a few weeks ago that @kellyhart started a similar discussion by the same name. Here you can connect with others like you who have had COVID twice and are dealing with lingering, life changing effects, like @lindamarie1949 @dubecates @zthinker69 @thomason @bunzman

Khonda, you ask "how do I cope what helps?" You might appreciate the tips in this discussion and expert blogs respectively:

It's been a year and eleven months since the first time I had Covid-19. I tested positive this morning. My husband who is a teacher brought it home from school.

I'm so worried that this will make my Post Covid Syndrome worse and I don't know if I can handle that.

Has anyone with Post Covid Syndrome gotten Covid again? Did it make your symptoms worse?

@ldropps, oh Laura, I can imagine testing positive today has you really worried that it could worsen your symptoms and cause a setback in your recovery. There are several members like @kellyhart @khonda @lindamarie1949 @dubecates @zthinker69 @bunzman @thomason who have had COVID twice and who are dealing with long COVID, who can share their experiences and whether they faced worsening symptoms or other setbacks.

Have you contacted the Post COVID Clinic to inquire whether you should make an appointment? How are you feeling? Any acute flu-like symptoms at this time?

@colleenyoung, I haven't even thought about contacting anyone. The last time I contacted my doctor at the post covid clinic a nurse told me that I shouldn't contact them anymore. I guess I felt hurt and forgotten. I guess I could message them, though.

I'm getting worse every minute. I've got a runny nose with sinus pressure. Also lots of body aches, but my fatigue is about the same.

I just want to cry.

@colleenyoung Here's part of what the nurse wrote, "I see you saw Dr. Anstine in August 2021. We are a Consultative Medicine practice so we cannot provide primary care. At this time your episode of care is complete in General Internal Medicine. "

This was in response to a question about c-reactive protein.

Yes I got Covid again and both times my husband brought it home to me. He had every vaccine and booster available; I’m allergic to the vaccine. I’m not having the high fevers like the first time but the joint pain and loss of taste is just as bad. And fatigue.

Yes, I got covid in Aug. 2021 and have had severe long haul covid symptoms since then. I had started to recover slightly when I got covid again 11 1/2 months later. Like you, I just wanted to cry or maybe even scream. I couldn't believe it and I was so worried it would set me back on my recovery or maybe even take me far worse than I had gotten the first time.

Just like the first time, I felt like I'd been hit by a train. It came on so suddenly and my fever rocketed up to 102 in no time. I left work and crashed on the couch. I felt awful. Headache, fever, body aches, sinus/cheek pressure, congestion, etc. But praise God! I was only that sick for maybe 1 1/2 days this time! (The first time, my fever lasted 11 days and, for the better part of 2 weeks, I couldn't eat anything. Nothing. Not even my daily vitamins ... nor the anti-nausea meds my doctor prescribed ... would stay down.) Praise God this 2nd time, I only felt nauseous for part of a day and I only missed 1 meal!

It did set me back in my recovery, though. I became so weak and my vertigo got so bad again that I started moving at a snail's pace again and had to use a cane again for about a week or two.

BUT ... I am happy to report those symptoms went away and, after about a month, I was back to at least where I was before my 2nd round with covid.

Hang in there. Drink lots of water but keep your electrolytes in balance, too, by either adding salt to your water or eating Pedialyte popsicles. Eat as much protein as you can. Take your vitamins (D, B12, fish oil pills w/omega-3s, zinc). Rest as much as you can, but try to build up your strength and stamina by doing a little bit each day ... and a little more each day. Watch your O2 sats to make sure your breathing is good.

Hang in there and keep the faith!

OMG. I can relate to your feelings of hurt. I’ve had similar experiences with doctors/nurses as have two of my friends. Please do not go back there or message them unless it’s to request your records. Find another doctor or clinic.
Also consider reporting them to the appropriate accreditation entity. Could be Patient Experience, in that clinic or hospital, could be the AMA, I’m not sure. I think one of the reasons medical personnel get away with this is patients don’t speak up. I seem to hear too many experiences like yours. You are definitely not alone.
I had Covid in July and it hung on for awhile. I was just getting back almost to normal when I got slammed with Covid- like symptoms again in early Sept. I felt frightened and angry. Thank God it was not Covid, simply a nasty respiratory virus, but I get your frustration about setbacks. I don’t know if this will work for you, but I took Tylenol and worked out through it as much as possible. I don’t seem to be any the worse off for handling it that way.
Yes, rest is important but sometimes taking it too easy will set you back more.
Remember probiotics and hopefully you come back quickly. 🙏
