Transplant: BK Virus
Hi all,
It's Friday night at 7:45pm and I just received an email notification from my local lab that my BK virus test came back positive. I am a two year post kidney transplant patient. Does anyone have any experience with BK virus? I had the CMV virus eight months after my transplant which is now resolved. But I am not familiar with BK and how it is treated, etc?
Thanks everyone!

Hi @cmael
I forgot to ask you. Now that you are finally negative for BK virus (YEAH!!!), was your Cellcept raised back to 750mg bid or is your new maintenance meds schedule now 500mg bid Cellcept with your Tac and Prednisone?
Hi hello1234, After my Cellcept was lowered to 500 bid, it stayed the same. It did not go back to 750.
Thank you @cmael 😊 I had my "every two weeks" lab work done yesterday so now I am waiting for my new BK viral number. I usually hear back from the lab on Thursday or Friday of the same week. It sure is nerve-wracking. I am trying to just go with the flow knowing that both you and Leah successfully got through it, even though you had some bouncing up and down viral numbers. I am trying to prepare myself that unlike my CMV viral numbers that decreased each week, this BK virus sounds like it's a different experience. Thank you again for all the hand-holding. I can't tell you how much I appreciate hearing from you!
@cmael and @leahdrose 😊
My WBC results came back and it is still 4.0 which is my normal low WBC at my normal dosage levels. During your recovery from BK, do you remember your approximate WBC with your reduced Mycophenolate?
I assume our Cellcept is reduced to bring the WBC up a little more than 4.0 to fight the virus.
I am curious if your WBC came up to a higher number during your recovery? Please let me know your thoughts on my WBC hypothesis. 😊 .Thank you!
My WBC was low shortly after surgery, but has remained within the normal parameters since, in spite of the BK. It has been between 5 and 6.7
@hello1234. Prior to BK, my WBC was 4.8. When it became active, my WBC test results were also low. 2.9, 2.5, 2.9, 3.7, 3.3 respectively every two weeks and 4.1 at negative BK result. My Myfortic was completely on hold during this period. I have lab test this coming Friday and praying to see good results. I will share them with you all. Hope things go well with you.
Thank you so much @cmael and @leahdrose 😊 All of your real life BK virus information is incredibly helpful (and calming!) for me. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you both for jumping in so quickly to help hand-hold me! Yes, @leahdrose definitely please post when you receive your new lab results! I should get my BK viral load number back tomorrow or Friday and I will definitely share! Thank you again 🥰🥰🥰
Good afternoon @cmael and @leahdrose and everyone following this discussion! 😊
I have EXCELLENT NEWS to share! I just received an email notification from Labcorp that one of my lab tests from Monday is complete.
When I logged into the portal, my BK virus load was 100 points less than two weeks ago.
So it's moving in the right direction finally!!! (not like last week).
I was dancing around my kitchen and I thought about @cmael and @leahdrose ....I wanted to share the news ASAP!!
THANK YOU for being so wonderful to me. You are true friends and I appreciate it more then you know!
P.S Leah, don't forget to share your blood work news on Friday. Hopefully, our Mayo Connect Transplant family will all continue to celebrate our lab work results together in the coming weeks!
@hello1234 Yay! It’s going the right direction! Happy for you!
Thank you so much
@jennifer0726 😊 I really appreciate all your support during my BK virus journey! From the beginning, when I was first diagnosed with the positive blood test, you have been cheering me on!
Thank you and I am going to continue to post until I am negative just like @cmael and @leahdrose and over the finish line!
