UTI: Another effect of a weakend immune system and long COVID

Posted by jeang455 @jeang45, Sep 6, 2022

I haven’t had a urinary tract infection in years. I had Covid in June, took Paxlovid, and rebounded, so I basically had Covid for about 3 weeks. Since, I have had problems with heart palpitations, fatigue, and depression, but felt like I was beginning to turn the corner last week. Now I have a uti. Like I said, I haven’t had one in about 20 years. Could it be Covid related? Anyone else had this problem?

@jeang45 Jean - I don't know if Covid is directly to "blame" but any time our system is weakened by a virus or infection, it is more limited for a time in the ability to fight off another pathogen. That is why a cold can turn into bronchitis or pneumonia, or a person is more susceptible to infection while recovering from chemotherapy or surgery.
So it may very well be related to having had Covid, but it is caused by a different bacteria.
I hope you get meds and feel better soon!

Thank you, Sue. I have felt that my immune system is weak right now. I appreciate your response.

I've had 3 in 11 months, since first Contracting covid. I've had long covid for 11 months. Too many symptoms to list. This included a stint on life support in April 2022.

I haven’t had a uti since getting Covid two months ago, but I just travelled and caught a nasty respiratory infection. I tested negative for Covid, so apparently it’s something else. I was still feeling the effects of the Covid infection(persistent low grade fever, fatigue) so I think my immune system is weak right now. Normally I don’t think this would have happened. I think Sue is right.
What holistic things can we take to pump up our immune systems?

I had one UTI before Covid years ago. 2 weeks into my Covid of July 2021, I had a UTI and it became chronic. If I miss d-mannose, I’m in terrible agony. That’s a long time and totally related to Covid imo.

I came on here just to look up UTIs and long Covid. I NEVER get them, until recently I feel like i was getting some. My daughter gets them and has kidney issues so she left her Pyridium and some antibiotics here. Last week I felt like I was getting a UTI so I took both of those, and it seemed to go away. A few days later, same thing. And if you ever took that you would know it makes your urine orange. Last night I started to feel like I was getting one again and took one and it did not get orange until the following morning which I think is weird, like it’s blocked in there??? . Now it’s night time again and I feel like I’m getting it again! I think this is post Covid related, I have sooooo many symptoms from this stupid thing it’s ridiculous! I’ve been doing this whole thing since February and my whole life has changed. Going to so many different types of drs trying to find out what’s going on. Every part of my body has been affected… 😩

So sorry for all that you’re going through. Just know that you are not alone. I had covid in June 2022, following a UTI infection diagnosed a few weeks prior. I was better after taking antibiotics. When I started with covid it attacked my bladder causing it to become overactive with urgency and frequency.
I was diagnosed with an overactive bladder after testing by a gynourologist last September. I also developed lymphedema which is controlled now wearing thigh high compression stockings daily, as well as using a compression pump for an hour after dinner every night. Hoping you get answers soon.

5 UTIs since I got Long Covid February 2021. Never had them before. I take D-Mannose and cranberry supplements off and on as possible preventatives, but am not sure they have helped. Right now trying a supplement of D-Mannose, cranberry, and hibiscus. I drink plenty of water. One thing I’ve read is that after menopause the tissue surrounding urethral opening dries out which makes it easier for bacteria to enter urethra and up to bladder, so I use vaginal estrogen for this. Also use lactobacillus vaginal suppositories and boric acid vaginal suppositories to keep that urethral opening acidic and with healthy bacteria. No longer wear underpants if wearing dresses or skirts ! Bactrim is my antibiotic of choice for treatment.

That does make sense and I do have some of that vaginal estrogen which my gynecologist had told me about last year and I bought it and never used it, because I got Covid and was too tired to do anything extra lol.
I’m going to try that, thanks for your reply!
