Besides bisphosphonates like Fosamax and Reclast, there is Prolia, which is also an anti-resorptive. If your osteoporosis is more severe or you have fractured, your choices would be Tymlos, Forteo or Evenity, which grow bone (Evenity grows bone and also affects resorption).
I am taking Forteo and have been for over a year.
When I aaked my doctor how we'd know if it was working, she said that it doesn't show on a bone scan. So, I asked then how? Do I have to fall and not break anything? I have done that so I guess it's working!

Took fosamax last year, 3 doses. Had hair loss, numbness in arms and fingers, extreme fatigue. Stopped taking it. Doctor said it was taking calcium out of my body.
Now gyn wants me to take prolia and I refused. Don't want the side effects. Anyone have experience with this? Any natural cures that work?
I took fosamax literally twice, years ago. It said I’m the box…”discontinue use if hip pain is present”. Well, it made my hips hurt, so I stopped…found out later I had AVN..avascular necrosis. Glad I stopped.
Had the same thing happen with steroids, so I stopped that as well. Unfortunately, dr.s seem to treat Al patients the same. EVERYBODY is different…but since you don’t find drs that practice in in more than 1 area, it’s quite frustrating because you get no continuity on care
@maricpat side effects of what drugs, concern you?
I am doing fine on Tymlos after many years of not being able to take the others. I started with a low dose. Side effects fade after some time, as your body adjusts.
It seems people are not having significant side effects with Evenity, for the most part.
Everyone is different. I was also scared of side effects and wish I had persisted in taking something because I ended up with fractures. Believe me, fractures are worse than side effects!
However, I need to add, if your DEXA score is not too bad, you may be able to wait and try more holistic methods.

Side effects of any of these since I had such a bad reaction to fosamax when it took calcium OUT of my body. DEXA of hip went from -3.0 to -3.2 in 2 years. I'm also way too thin and have been my whole life.

But the side effects of the other drugs (the ones that are not bisphosphonates) are different from Fosamax. They each have a different mechanism. And each drug is different for each person. What is your lumbar spine score?
Exercise, diet, supplements can help those with lower DEXA scores and as a supplementary approach can help those on meds too. Look at McCormick's "The Whole Body Approach to Osteoporosis" or Lani Simpson's website for example.
You don't want to fracture! Maybe you could try Tymlos starting at a low dose, like me.
I was on Fosamax for years and I can't say it did much for me. It also upset my stomach. My dexa scans did not jump for joy.
I tried Prolia for a year and I had hair loss and joint aches. I am on nothing now and don't know what else to do.

Are you sure that is what your doctor said? That is not what my doctor says.
Very nervous about side effects.

Spine went from 2 to 2.2 in 2 years.

@ams has your doctor suggested Tymlos, Forteo or Evenity?
@marcipat -2.2 is still osteopenia, so apparently you don't yet have osteoporosis in your spine.
