Bone Loss Drug Reclast

Posted by seniorlady @seniorlady, Jul 24, 2016

Has anyone had the injection and what have been the results...side effects or not? I am to start on this later this week and am considering not doing it because of possible side effects....the idea that the bone cells causing the bone loss (due to aging) will be changed by the drug scares me.

I received the reclast infusion 1 month ago for 5 days I had chills, sweats and body aches. Day 5 felt better and then experienced eye Inflammation and had to go to the doctor. One month in I have the worst headaches. I am healthy, not on any meds exercise 5 days a week but had bone loss and this was recommended by my doctor. I am shocked it has been this bad and never want it again ! Has anyone had these types of side effects I am desperate.

Um, does high blood pressure count? I’m having to take pills because it shot up so high after my Reclast infusion. I still can’t sleep either.
If you Google “Reclast” you’ll find an entire website dedicated to bad side effects from it. There are hundreds of people who experienced terrible things after their infusions. (Of course I found it after I’d had my infusion.)

I had a Reclast infusion in June. I didn’t have a reaction after getting it, but had made sure to drink water, before and after. I do anyway because of my transplant. I also took Tylenol. Since the infusion I have noticed more joint pain, though. When I took Reclast by mouth, I had heartburn. My endocrinologist decided that I needed to switch to the once a year infusion.

I will never have this again

I was on Fosamax for years and nothing improved. Then decided on Reclast infusion one time a year for five years.
I had two years of Reclast but then I had an implant put in and then I had to wait for it to be completely done and then 5 months later I could start Reclast again. But infusion servicer left our building so things were forgotten. But for the first two, I had no problems at all. Then again nothing was done for years until now and out of the blue, they decided to try Tymlos. So after 4 months, I am off of it. I wonder if I could finish my last 3 years of Reclast before going forward since I had no problem? I guess that is something I need to ask. I did not know you could take Reclast by mouth only 100ml infusion. Well, let me know your progress. Stay safe and well.

@echolsleslie I'm sorry you have had such severe effects from Reclast. They say the percentage is extremely low, and I do know a number of people who have not had any problems, but for the people who do have problems, it really is miserable.

I know my doctor will push Reclast when I get off of Tymlos so I am very concerned about this too. Will you go on a different drug after your year of Reclast is over?

Thank you. I am not sure yet this was the first time I had any treatment I was surprised that it progressed. I exercise 5 days a week and always have but . . I will need to have a scan next year and consult my doctor. The nurse that gave me the infusion said both of her patients have bad symptoms. The one positive aspect is almost everyone says it works !

In case it is helpful, I did Forteo for two years and experienced positive gains (approx 12% in Spine and 6% in Hip). Some Tymlos is similar, you will hopefully also have positive gains. I had not taken any other Osteo drugs prior to that. I did the Reclast infusion a couple of months ago (followed the hydration/Tylenol advice) and experienced very little discomfort or side effects. Hopefully you will also breeze through. I always feel so badly for people who do have reactions to these meds.

Colleen, since my insurance will pay for a DEXA once every 2 years, I have not had once since my first Reclast infusion. I will have another DEXA in December and then decide if Reclast is helping and whether to have a third one.

Medicare states you can only have a DEXA scan every 2 years, but you can certainly have them yearly as long as your doctor orders it and there is a medical need like osteoporosis. I have them yearly. Too many changes can happen in 2 years.

I had the infusion about 6 weeks ago. I have had increased joint pain. I would not recommend it unless it is your last resort. I had fallen and fractured my hip and about 4 months later had fallen again. I did not hurt myself at all on the second fall. However it scared me so I did the reclast. I think working on balance, taking bone supplements, etc. can help. Now alot of people have no side effects so you might be one of those. I have a friend who had none, and another who had some minor joint pain that did not last.
