Buttock/tailbone pain, sitting or lying down - symptom of PMR?

Posted by pacarolyn @pacarolyn, Oct 4, 2021

Has anyone experienced buttock/tailbone pain when seated or lying down as a symptom of PMR? Also, has anyone had labs showing elevated LDL-Cholesteral or anemia that wasn't diagnosed prior to PMR onset?

Quilterdar, I am curious You said your PMR was gone, how long did it take to go into remission? And it came back? I’d love to hear from others that there really is hope that it will go into remission.

@suzorand, I've had two occurrences of PMR. The first lasted 3 and half years in which time I was able to taper off of prednisone. It stayed in remission for a little over 6 years and came out of remission mid 2016 when I went back on prednisone (20 mg) and I was able to taper off in about a year and half. My PMR has been in remission since late 2018 so I'm hoping it never comes back. Also, I've made a lot of lifestyle changes which I'm thinking will help keep it in remission - eating healthier, more exercise and losing some weight. There is hope! Keep learning as much as you can and take it a day at a time. Here's some information that might be helpful.

Thanks John, I really appreciate your input and it is such a comfort to have this website to learn from and relate to others who are in the same situation.

Yes it’s one of the worst symptoms for me and I make myself get up and move as someone said. It’s the only relief. Also agree with soft car seat cushion as long trips are painful.

I had this problem along with the "frozen" shoulder before I was diagnosed and started taking Prednisone. I am trying to get off of said drug after two and a half years and the "pain in the butt" has returned with lots of other muscular tightness and spasms so It looks as though I won't be stopping Prednisone after all.

I am curious about what you mention as "spasms". I am going through butt pain, which I completely understand (like sitting on bleachers for hours and can't stand the pain) but this time I'm having muscle spasms in the butt. Is that typical of PMR pain? I'm trying to decide if I"m dealing with PMR pain or pain from my really screwed up spine. If I hadn't just been diagnosed with PMR in Sept. this would be a no-brainer! I'm supposed to taper tomorrow and I'm thinking maybe that shouldn't be happening. I asked my doctor and his answer was that was a really good question! I don't need compliments - I need answers!

Yes ... I've had both butt pain and iron deficient anemia this past year along with PMR ... think there is a connection. Right now I'm in pretty good shape, no PMR pains since September, no elevated labs, just boarder line anemia. My Subaru has pretty good seats but a 20 minute drive used to feel like 20 hours till I learned to push my butt back in the seat and sit bolt upright ... just the opposite of what you might think. Meanwhile one of those wooden bead seat things might help.

Sorry if this sounds like bull (ony), but excersize and attitude has a lot to do with overcoming PMR ... IMHO. When my rheumatologist found my labs were back to normal he convinced me that my pains were age and arthritis and that getting off Prednisone one mg monthly was right. Walking, yoga, lots of exercise, overcoming anxiety are my friends. Inactivity, watching the news too much, and thinking about illness are my enemies.

I had tailbone pain with my PMR. I also had elevated anemia levels and above average LDL

I see that more of us are reporting that since I first posted it. Go back and read the thread for updates.

Two years and counting and drs still can't tell me whats causing my tailbone to hurt upon sitting or lying on my back. Pillows of all kinds have not helped. The last diagnosis I got was that since I loss weight I may have lost cushion around the bone (ha) Xrays and MRIs have been inconclusive. Still hurting!

Yes, and yes !!! Butt pain, noticeably when sitting in the car, even though my Subaru has normally very comfortable seats. Though it's finally gone away recently, a twenty minute drive used to feel like ten hours. No sitting position on the couch was comfortable, now that has gone away, but lying on my back in bed is still uncomfortable though all other symptoms are gone and all blood markers are normal. And yes, I'm boarder line anemic. Tried 65 mg. iron tablets but after a week they bothered my stomach. I'll talk to my GP in two weeks about iron deficiency anemia. No cholesterol problems. Glad you mentioned this, thought I was a lone weirdo, and even my rheumatologist though my butt pain was an unrelated back problem.

Sadly I had back/hip pain also. I’ve now been diagnosed with AS and PMR. Now L/S hip is degenerated. Got to love that Predisone. It’s all a trade off. Pain or bad joints/bones
