High Coronary Calcium Score: How do others feel emotionally?

Posted by mcphee @mcphee, Dec 14, 2016

I have a calcium score of 1,950 which is extremely high which means I am at a very high risk for a cardiac event,heart attack,stroke or sudden death.

I take a statin and baby aspirin. I have never been sick, have excellent cholesterol, low blood pressure and I am not overweight. I have no other health problems and I have never been sick. But I feel like a walking time bomb which has caused me a lot of stress. I am 70 yrs old.

I wonder how others with this condition feel emotionally?

@perry1,

I was living in the SF Bay Area at the time and I don’t remember who the surgeon was. It was at a major medical center with a department specializing in thyroid surgery for cancer. My policy is to always seek at the best surgeon for surgery, even if I have to pay out of pocket or travel.

Also, my Coronary Calcium scored decreased from 199 to 18. The surgery helped plus taking vitamin K2 to help deposit calcium in my senior bones instead of in my heart. My home cardiologist said the Vitamin K2, not K1, was ok for me to take. And my vitamin D level is now 65; it was only 13 when I had the surgery.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks to both of you for your posts! I found out in February I had a cac of 2200. I was 259 pounds at 53 years of age. Now 10 mo later down to 200. Passed the nuclear stress test and connected with a Bale-Doneen physicisn in Illinois. Am on 2.5 mg Crestor every other day and also on ramipril 2.5 mg daily. He did some genetic testing and found out I need to stay away from gluten. So eating a lot of vegetables and salmon! Thanks again for your posts it’s nice to remember that I am not in this alone.

So you had your last CAC test done in 2019. Are you thinking of getting another CAC in 2022 to see if there are improvements? Thank you

Same boat Keith. 57 and I just had a CACS done yesterday. 1600. History of family heart disease. Doctor called me same day. Limit red meat and dairy. Double Rouvostatin to 20 mg. Consider my safe healthy, always worked out, pilot so I watch my health. Unfortunately, I'm in that gene pool. I'm now considering vegan approach to lower my CAC score. Time to educate myself.

Research on you tube how K2 / MK-7 pulls calcium from your arteries.....good luck.

Without sounding to harsh, pharmaceutical company's make billions of dollars on drugs...when they realize there's money to be made. Then they'll get in on it, I have been using supplements for years, when I was on dialysis I was never in the hospital....you need to broaden your spectrum and do more research. There's p[plenty of information on these supplements, even on main stream, Harvard, mayo, and quite a few others, and most doctors, I should say some doctors will not tell you .

I agree that's why they don't tell you about Vit K2 and how it removes calcium from the arteries. Check out Dr. John Whitcomb seminar on Vitamin K2 / MK-7

Hi again, Tim. Yes, I agree. CAC scores are statistically associated with coronary risk, but there are plenty of outliers, ie, someone with a CAC score of 400 and no plaque on angiogram (a case my cardiologist had). And those of us with scores off the charts, no one understands the meaning. If Annie, with a CAC score of 256 is in the 92nd percentile for MI risk, those of us in the thousands ought to be dead several times over. Apparently, we're not.

What are the odds that the score represents calcium on the outside of the artery. I’ve heard this happens and hoping it happens a lot. I’m 58 with a 1150 score from 2 years ago so likely higher now. I feel great, walk 4 miles 5 times a week at fast pace and have no symptoms. All other tests show doing well including stress test. I take statin and BP pills now so all look good. Doc hates vitamins and just wants to wait for symptoms to look into it further.

The odds? We'd all like to know that but we don't have enough data points. I have a colleague who has a high score, had an angiogram, and the calcium was all on the outside of the artery. While this doesn't represent atherosclerosis, we also don't know what, if any, are the long term consequences of external Ca++ build up. But we'd sure like it there rather than lining the pipes, huh..... "Doc hates vitamins"?.... sheesh....
