After Iridotomy - eye pain and headaches 2 months later

Posted by dibr @dibr, Sep 28, 2018

I had a YAG iridotomy done July 24th because my angles were closed. No pain, no nothing … no symptoms. My left eye was done first and yes it hurt but in 5 minutes, pain was gone. A whole different story with my right eye. The initial laser zap was an unbelievable pain that I have ever experienced (I have a very high tolerance for pain) and it never went away and I also had extreme headache on right side as well. I asked the opthamologist what happened because of the extreme pain and headaches. He said nothing. I asked if everything was ok, he said yes. I continue to have headaches and pain in my right eye 2 months later. Has anyone else experienced this?

My wife had the LPI surgeries in both eyes back in 2019. Due to high pressures and concern for glaucoma. Since the surgeries, she has had level eight pain behind the eyes nonstop causing her to be bedridden And now disabled. We have seen all the doctors and nobody knows how to treat her. If anybody has any direction or advice we’d love to hear it.

Hi Matt,
I'm so sorry to hear about your wife's ongoing pain and it's effect on her quality of life. What have the doctors told her?

@longislandmike, how are you doing?

Headaches have subsided for the most part but still there. Recurring discomfort in and around Eye. While I understand surgery was needed I am apprehensive about doing the other eye. Looking for recommendations for a top Doc in NYC if anyone can recommend as my guy has zero interest in assisting

In my opinion iridotomy is the worst thing ever happened to the people

I totally agree. My life has been upside down since I had iridotomy in September 2020. Are you getting better @karen888 ?

@karen888, I’m so sorry you had such an awful experience. I just had bilateral LPI (R on 12/6 and L on 12/13) and I’ve been suffering ever since. White lines, spotty vision, eye pain and fatigue, headaches to name a few. Did your symptoms ever subside? Did you ever consult another Ophthalmologist?

Hi All - 1 year after my iridotomy, I am still suffering from pain in my right eye, ptosis, and anisocoria. I have seen NUMEROUS specialists. In August of 2021, I was diagnosed with posterior uveitis. I am currently taking Prednisone, which helps a bit. I was also prescribed Methotrexate, and then CellCept. Unfortunately, I could not tolerate either. I am currently waiting for insurance to approve Humira. There is no systemic reason for my uveitis. The pain feels like thousands of pieces of broken glass in my right eye. The only thing that helps with pain is Fioricet (I am taking 2-3x/day). Has anyone else experienced uveitis?

I too had the surgery on both eyes but still suffer from headaches or pressure behind the eyes. I have found that applying a cold compress really helps and it often goes away. I have a small ice pack i keep in the freezer for when they start hurting at home. Really helps!
It really is disheartening to see that so many doctors on here are wiping their hands clean after you have the surgery and not resolving the issue or helping if the symptoms persist - I have just moved to FL so I have to find a new Opth Dr - fingers crossed I find a good one!

I've been having some of the same symptoms, had both eyes done over 2 months ago. I have discomfort, eye vision problems, pressure and pain going up from the bottom of head to over my right eye and head, never had this before, very painful. I wished I had never had the laser treatment. From some of your advice I think I need to see a neuro ophthalmologist. Thank you for all your experiences, it has been helpful.
