Every day I cough up what looks like a scab with ugly mucous and blood

Posted by needtoknow @needtoknow, Feb 10, 2016

Every day I cough up what looks like a scab with ugly mucous and tiny amounts of blood. It seems to come from the back of my throat or nose. My doctor has seen the scab but does not see anything wrong. This, to me, seems really odd. Has anyone had this problem?

@fcleaner1 @beebuzz @needtoknow Hey guys, pardon the totally gross pictures, but I thought it might be helpful to make sure everyone has the same issue in mind. The photo is of the afore mention snot crusts. I’ve been definitively diagnosed with chronic adenoiditis, and will soon be having them removed. Currently, I have to clear one of these bad boys out more or less daily, and at times, it can be annoyingly difficult, painful, and embarrassing to try and “cough it up.” Basically, you sound like you’re trying to (pardon me) “hawk up” a stubborn loogie (sp?). I encourage anyone with similar symptoms to gather the evidence: save/document a series of crusts (to show your provider), study nasal anatomy/read about chronic adenoiditis, and perhaps most important: find an ENT who listens to you, and agrees to perform an internal laryngopharyngeal exam with a flexible fiber scope.

@klpdx thanks for posting these. They look exactly like what I have had going on for probably 10 years. I actually just went about 3-4 years without having them much at all and after a sinus infection started a few weeks ago I have them weekly or more again. Mine look like yours and often are sortof bloody looking. This is the first thread I’ve EVER found that someone else has had the same thing!

I really appreciate the update, Sarah! Can you share where you got these tips about adding baby shampoo and Ponaris nasal emollient? How has microwaving the rinse bottle helped?

Hi Colleen, I got the tips about using the drop of the J & J baby shampoo from this discussion board and my own research reading various medical articles and a few available studies. For example: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18284857/

I use the baby shampoo to try and keep biofilms of bacteria from forming in my nasopharynx and collect there. I want to avoid taking constant antibiotics and this is a way to manage it without constant use of antibiotics.

The Polaris oil keeps the nasal area from being too try and forming the crusts. I got that suggestion from this thread as well and it works.

The idea to heat the bottle (20 seconds) before using the saline rinse was something I thought of to try. After doing it the first time, I observed that the warm rinse flows through and out my nasal passages much easier and seems to do a better job at clearing any crusts from forming in my experience doing this. I'd highly recommend these methods to anyone struggling with the awful symptoms of this issue.

How did it go? Were you able to make the appointment/get the procedure done?

Finally I have found other people who have the same condition!!! I have had these for several months now and I absolutely hate it!!!!!! I was wondering if it were possible if we might be able to narrow down some causes together. Prior to these, I was having terrible coughing fits upon eating. I was told I had LPR, then that was ruled out. I was treated for Vocal Chord Dysfunction. When I decided to start chewing Xtra Sugarfree gum several months ago is when it began. Not that that has anything to do with it. I am also treated for GERD and have been taking Nexium for many years now. I also suffer from an anxiety disorder. A few years ago I did suffer from Mold Poisoning for a year and had to leave my home and belongings behind (all due to water damage from a leak that wasn’t taken care of). I figured I’d throw some of this out there to see if any connections might be made. My ENT just says he sees some crusting, but also has never heard of or seen what I have shown him in pictures.

Welcome @hsconz, It is comforting to finally know that you are not alone battling this condition. I'm not sure if you have had a chance to read through the discussion but thought I would mention the post earlier in the discussion where @sarahbrhein shared some really good information. Here's the link to her post - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/634674/

I don't have the coughing problem but do have the crusting in the nasal passage and stuffiness. I used a proprietary Mayo Clinic nasal spray for 3 months along with a twice daily nasal rinse but I'm now just doing the nasal rinse in the morning and evening before going to bed. I may give the Ponaris nasal emollient she mentioned a try also as I've been off of the medicated nasal spray for about 6 months and don't breathe quite as good as when I was on the nasal spray.

Have you found anything that helps some with the crusting?

Arm &Hammer Simply Saline 3xday, followed by gentle blowing from each nostril, has solved crusting problem.
In dry conditions and before sleep, I spray a small amount of pure oil into the tip of one nostril (septum side).
(4 bad nosebleeds within 2 weeks for no apparent reason - from that spot.)

I also use the Arm & Hammer Simply Saline spray but it doesn't really help with my stuffed up nose like a rinse. It does help keep it moist though.

Do you still have issues with your vocal cord too?

Thank you so much for the info!! I will absolutely check that out. Sleeping with a humidifier seems to have been helping some. I have been realizing I am sleeping with my mouth open which is probably drying me out too. I am going to watch my diet for a few days and see if it can be silent reflux affecting it.

I am told I do. I did have voice therapy several times that seemed to help my vocal chords some.
