Very high blood pressure--nervous to take more meds
I have very, very high pressure, had it for years. I have been warned many times but I'm 78, do not want a stroke or go blind or have kidney failure (of course). I need a knee and hip operation but the ortho doctor said he couldn't operate on me until my pressure is controlled. I've been taking lisinopril 40mg and it's still high. (170+/80) The doctor prescribed amlodipine 2.5mg (small dose to start with) but I am afraid to take it because of the side effects I've been reading about. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks for all the responses. My pressure hasn't really gone down since adding the 2.5 Amlodipine. So I'm expecting the Dr. to add more. (sigh). I will see him in a few weeks, I guess he wanted a few weeks to pass since I read it takes time for the medication to kick in.
Now that's interesting about the generic norvasc. I'll check to see what I'm taking. When I took bp recently it was about 190 over something. The machine said critical, critical!
Just wondering why they put you on generic Amlodipine. Meantime, keep up hoping. I try my best, sounds like you are too.
I take three BP meds. Amlodipine, Metoprolol (75mg) and lisinopril; If I didn't my BP would likely be in the range you are describing.
@cindiwass I'm sorry to hear your BP is still so high. One thing I can mention is don't take your BP 4-5times a day by taking that much your dwelling on it and it will stay high .Your emotions play a big part in your B P Do you have a good machine ? Has your Dr looked at it?
My doctor just took it the other day and it was high so he kind of begged, implored, chastised me to take more meds which is why I started taking the Amlodipine. 2.5 I don't think I'm having a bad reaction to it, but the pressure is still very high. Meantime I have been reading and see that some of the high blood pressure can be because of stress. And I have plenty of that, not going into detail. I've tried eliminating salt, cutting out caffeine, nothing works. I have a pretty good diet. Although I'm a bit (?) overweight. I was taking my pressure several times a day, but I haven't been doing that lately, just taking the meds. I have a lot of hip and knee pain so it's hard for me to exercise right now.
Yes, we do keep trying our best. Never give up. This issue with 'the filler in Generic BP meds or any Maintenance medication (meaning meds you have to take everyday the rest of your life) per the Professor at the University, said it affects Seniors. And it is an Adverse affect, not a side affect or allergic reaction. Adverse means it pecomes permanent if you stay on the medications. I did call my Pharmacist and just asked him if the Generic Amlodipine causes pain in the pelvic and legs. He told me it can cause Myalgia in the elderly. That is why I went to the University to be tried on ALL Channel Blocker Generic BP medications because my RX Plan was refusing to cover the Name Brand after 20 years. Because of my Thyroid and CKD I have to have a Channel Blocker BP. Good Luck to you. I recently found out that Garlic Extract in the Vitamin Aisles helps lower your blood pressure, so I just ordered it.
The University docs tried me on Lisinopril, Diovan, Carvedilol, Losartan & Valsartan and some others I can't remember. Just found out Metoprolol, even just the 25mg, messed with my Synthroid. I have no Thyroid and have been in Hypothyroid several times, so not good to take something that messes with it. And I have to take a Channel Blocker BP with my Stage 4 CKD. Norvasc name brand and also the Generic for those that can use Generic is Kidney Friendly and a Channel Blocker.
