Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation

Hello! I'm curious if anyone has experience with the Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation treatment (inspiresleep.com) I do not tolerate the CPAP and am feeling more hopeful about this alternative than from a dental device. So far I've read the website and watched their videos but it would be nice to hear about the experience from someone who's not connected to the company. I've gotten to this point because I've had two different CPAP's and countless masks. Nothing works. I simply cannot sleep using a CPAP. I have an appointment with a new sleep doctor (my former doctor retired) but cannot get in until November.

Thanks in advance!
JJ

Did you have INSDPIRE with a doctor experienced in this new procedure?

Yes my doctor was very experienced in this technique. This isn't such a new procedure as it has been quite a few years in use. It was only recently though that it became more widely advertised and we found out about it.

It was developed by Inspire Medical Systems in Maple Grove Minnesota. And currently available in 60 medical centers across the US and Europe. The Star Clinical Trial began in 2010 at 22 medical centers.

It was approved by the FDA in 2014. I found there were 2 generations of the implant. The first one was not compatible with MRI's. The second generation of the implant is conditionally approved for magnetic resonance imaging scans and extremites with the 1.5 Tesla magnet.

I was tagged for inspire and refused. I am not overweight or severe so I should have never been picked...Multiple implants involved and implants don't have a very good safety record. Please read up very carefully before committing to this...

Those selected for inspire are not overweight or have severe sleep apnea. To be selected you must have medium apnea and a normal body weight.

Hello @wabbit9, Welcome to Connect. I know CPAPs can be difficult to use for a lot of people. It took me awhile before I was able to use one without feeling suffocated. You will notice that we moved your post to the following existing discussion where @joanjg, @total99 and others are discussing the Inspire device.

From what I've read the Inspire device doesn't work for everyone with sleep apnea. You might want to take a look at the manufacturers frequently asked questions and see if it will work for you - https://www.inspiresleep.com/faq/.

Have you discussed the Inspire device with your doctor?

I understand this device is surgically implanted which if it works and is covered my Medicare , might be a better solution for those of us who do not want noisy machines and hoses!

Hello @chucklesg, I moved your discussion and combined it with an existing discussion titled: "Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation" - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/inspire-upper-airway-stimulation/.

I did this so you could meet other members who proposed the same question as you. @wabbit9, @joanjg, and @total99 posted about being approved for the device as well.

@chuckslesg, have you been approved and are you scheduled to receive this device?

I had inspire implanted in 2019. Had a hard time adjusting to the tongue movements at first. I am a slim female so it is noticeable on my upper chest and also didn’t completely give maximum results so I also have an M.A.D for my recessed chin. Do lots of research and right down many questions. A mandatory endoscopy is needed to see if you qualify. Good luck !
