Anyone have insomnia as symptom of COVID-19?

Posted by mkqq @mkqq, Apr 30, 2020

Hi all,

So I got sick 8 weeks ago and the doctor thinks it might have been Covid-19. There was no way to be certain as the infection was already gone when I visited the clinic last week. They did a CRP test and it showed no sign of infection.

I started with a fever that lasted 3 days and suddenly on the 4th or 5th day I had a sleepless night. Then for the next 5 days I had alternating nights where I slept and where I couldn't sleep at all. For the last 8 weeks or so my sleeping has been absolutely terrible.

The doctor tells me she has seen other Covid-19 patients and some of they say they cannot sleep.

Just wondering is anyone experiencing insomnia as a direct symptom of Covid-19? Or does it always come down to anxiety and your fight/flight response? For me there is a lot of anxiety which is contributing to the problem.

Many thanks

Sorry to hear about so many of you contracting insomnia from Covid-19.
I have not had Covid-19, but when I received the first Covid vaccination with Comirnaty (Pfizer/BioNTech), I got really bad insomnia for 7 nights. It took hours to fall asleep, then I slept for a maximum of two hours, woke up and the same thing over again. After 10 nights my sleep was back to normal again, the problem resolved spontaneously. The insomnia was a weird experience, the mind was completely awake but the body gradually got really tired over the sleepless week.
Insomnia is a known adverse effect of the vaccine, reported by the producer to be uncommon and happen in ≥ 1/1,000 to < 1/100. I find it biologically interesting that both the disease and the vaccine can give rise to insomnia and hope for research to clarify the mechanisms.

Have you seen any information whether the insomnia after Comirnaty can get worse with the second or third vaccination?

Hello. Has this changed for you? I had Covid in April- had mild symptoms but debilitating insomnia. It’s been terrible and has greatly affected my life. I have never had insomnia before, and do not suffer from anxiety or depression. I have anxiety now due to not being able to sleep. Over the counter sleep meds do not work. I’m just never sleepy. Are you finally able to sleep?

Today is 1 year since I tested positive for covid. Insomnia continues to plague me. Either I can not fall asleep or I wake after 2-3 hours and unable to fall back asleep for another 1-2 hours. I do not watch TV, play on my phone or laptop in bed. I have a routine of going to bed at the same time every night, cleaning teeth and face, change to pajamas, get in bed, only a bedside lamp is turned on, read a book (not magazine or news) 30-60 minutes, turn off the lamp without going to bed. I usually wind down with a tv show on the couch and the lights low for the hour prior to getting ready for bed. I don't drink caffiene past 3pm. BUT... Melatonin will help is I have more than 2 nights in a row with difficulty sleeping.

I came down with COVID 19 on August 20th and haven't had much luck sleeping either. I wake with pain and just can't get back to sleep. Lack of sleep causes pain to be harder to deal with. I had been on Oxycodone prior to Covid but continue to take it to deal with several other troubling side effects. Pain levels of 11-12 range and strange nervous system ordeals, etc..

I am 1 year out and still have sleeping trouble. only 2-3 times a week do I sleep 'normal'. The other nights are trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, interrupted sleep, up for 1-2 hours in the middle of the night or waking up at 4 or 5 & unable to fall back asleep. Consistent 'sleep hygiene' helps. when I wake in the middle of the night I read to help me fall back asleep-stay away from the computer screens!

I did have bouts of insomnia which contributed to my anxiety causing me to have multiple panic attacks. Still not sleeping the greatest but better

Welcome, @eboys9797. What a vicious circle. When one doesn't sleep, it can certainly worsen mood, anxiety, cognitive ability and other things that make it a challenge to function. What has help to improve your sleep?

Yes I do the same thing with my sleeping . I started taking a sleep aid and it does help. I was thankful I had all my vaccines. I got it a the hospital from a throat procedure. I have many underlying problems. So thankful I had the vaccines. I stayed away from my husband. So get ready a total of a sleeping problem I’m going on 4th month. Good luck

Sleep is good some nights and not so much others. I had covid in October. I was in the hospital 5 days. They gave me melatonin each night. I didn't think about it then as I still slept restlessly with it. After I got home I tried it after not sleeping first two nights. I only took it a few nights. Also am a 53 year old woman so had nights like this before being sick. Definitely feel covid altered it more.
