Lupus and blood disorder (elevated WBC/monocytes & lymph’s)?

Posted by stephchurch @stephchurch, Oct 29, 2021

Can lupus make it seem like you could possibly have a blood disorder? I was referred to Hematology/ oncology for unexplained bruising and high WBC counts. I received no answers, no Bone marrow biopsies. It’s hard not feeling like they are missing something .

Hi there, I recently had a CBC come back with elevated neutrophils, monocytes, lymphocytes and WBC count. I have been experiencing unexplained bruising, gum bleeding and GI issues. I do have Lupus and MCTD. I currently take Benlysta infusions.

I tested positive for Antiphosphilipid and Von Willebrands. My Dr. decided to re draw the Von Willebrands and it was right on the line of abnormal and normal range.

@stephchurch Im sorry that you’re having these confusing things going on. I’m so glad that you have found Mayo Clinic Connect. We’re all volunteers who share experiences and resources. But we can’t diagnose—we’re not doctors. I, too, have an autoimmune disease, though not lupus.
You were sent to a hematologist/oncologist because of the bruising and high white cell count, right? Did this doctor run any more tests or have you make a second appointment? Or did he say nothing at all?
Now I’m thinking again: Have you spoken with the 1st doctor, who made the referral, and explained that the second doctor said and did nothing? If NO, will you try it and let me know?

Hi Becky, the HEMOC doctor did no extra testing or make any extra appointments. She didn’t wAnt to hear about any symptoms I’ve been experiencing and she just bad mouthed my primary. I spoke with my primary and she was very concerned.

WOW, i think it’s time to see a different oncologist! Can you get a referral to a regional medical center or university medical center? Advocate for yourself @stephchurch !

@stephchurch, I merged the 2 discussions you started into one discussion that is visible in both the Autoimmune group and the Blood Disorders group. That way you only have one place to follow the discussion.

My Primary just sent some of my chart to Sloan Kettering. All they stated was that they think nothing Malignant at this time but to keep an eye on labs. My primary then asked me what they said about my bleeding and clotting disorders…. They too did not mention….

Hi Steph, to help you know what questions to ask your doctors, you might find this article helpful:
- Blood Disorders and Lupus https://lupus.net/blood-abnormalities

I'm also tagging fellow lupus members like @dorrielee @funcountess @geegie @marye2 @linda2114 @mtblack on this discussion to see if they may have any experience to share about lupus and blood abnormalities or disorders.

Keep asking questions, Steph.

All I can do is commiserate; I am also doing the wait for another set of issues- periodic labs and CTs. It is unnerving, for sure. I do get the lab results online and do an internet search of critical wording. With autoimmune, we are apt to also get other conditions AND to see things early before they are a true reason for diagnosis and treatment. My analogy is it is like a cold, which is untreatable until it is pneumonia.

I’m sorry you are going through this as well. It sounds like we have come to the right place to ask questions though 🙂 hang in there!
