Y-90 liver cancer treatment

Posted by mudshark @mudshark, Dec 8, 2019

I recently was treated with y-90 on a tumor in my liver. I am interested in knowing of others that have had experiences good, or bad, and of long term results. I have had prior resection of the liver to remove a tumor but a new tumor surfaced in a different section. I am hoping the y-90 will prove to be a more permanent solution. Thanks

Yesterday my husband got his second Y 90 therapy. He did well and the IR doctor a gem of a doctor said he did very well.
However on Monday we had an oncologist meeting and she basically said we have limited therapies for you. Where do you want to live happily in your home country or her.
I was so upset that she took two things away and am still upset.HOPE can never be taken away! And this was the day before his Y90 therapy. He is also on Lonsurf.
I am so upset with her I explained to the nurses of IR this and they said you never take HOPE away and he is doing the treatment Y90 and lonsurf. Time to have a long chat with oncology team. Too many gaffs made.
Please help someone with your thoughts

Gosh I hate that for you. Should you get another opinion from a different oncologist? She says they have limited therapies for you, ok, what are they? Is there anyone else on the oncology team you trust that you can talk to? Sure doesn't seem hopeless to me if they went to the extent of doing the Y90 treatment.

Let me say this strongly. Where there is life there is always hope, miracles happen everyday. He's made it through this for a long time so there's no reason to give up now. Being a strong Christian I always take faith over fear and don't let a person in a white coat decide who lives or dies. That doesn't mean you have to be Christian to get help from above. We are all God's children.

How is he handling the side effects from this last Y90 shoot?

Keep posting!

Diane thanks for your response. I agree with you and first and foremost my daily prayers do not stop yes I will look for another oncologist elsewhere or another team there
The Y90 yesterdsy went very well. Recovery good and kept him lying flat for four hours to make sure no bleeding. IR doctor a sweetheart came before and after to see us. We stayed close to hospital overnight in case of need and came home today
So far so good tired perky no nausea eating lightly resting well so hope tonight is good. Tomorrow labs and Friday start cycle 2 of lonsurf.
If the white labs do this again I will be upfront that they do not have crystal ball.
HOPE and treatments we still have
Btw look up hunter college and research on olive oil for colorectal cancer and what they found. Beginnings of hope something important.
Keep in touch

I looked up an article at hopkinsmedicine.org entitled Treating Colon Cancer That Has Spread to the Liver; A Team Approach that makes it sound like you have lots of options! Has he thought about having his colon removed? Pretty serious step but loads better than what the oncologist was saying. Is he doing ok with Y90 side effects today.

The first Y90 on left liver lobe was kind of rough but afterwards went okay. Prior to that he had a celiac plexus block four days ago he had the Y90 right liver lobe and it went really well. Cea was at 200 and yesterday labs showed it at 187 cea. Other Labs were great.
Yesterday started cycle 2 of Lonsurf 55mg morning and same evening for five days off 2 then on five off for several weeks.
However he had a fat fecal test and it was abnormal so we are seeing a GI doctor in three weeks. He needs to gain weight but fecal qualitative being abnormal means he is loosing nutrients any thoughts about diet to improve nutrients and retain them? Bowel movement improving slowly, appetite is good but not eating all of the food. Any suggestions will be of help.

My husband just had on Tuesday his second Y90 treatment of the right lobe. In September he had the left lobe Y90 the first one was kind of rough as before that he had a celiac plexus block.
The Tuesday Y90 went really well with few if none complications. Our IR doctor at Hopkins and his team were the finest most caring and compassionate group! In fact his triage team is the finest and most caring group.
He has experienced weight and muscle mass loss since July due to oncology not addressing some issues. And I am upset considerably. Now oncology is scheduling weekly visits tele or in person, and they referred us to a GAstroentrologist specialist head of the dept. To address the issue of fecal fat qualitative stool sample showing abnormal.
You just have to be proactive and find the right departments to address your issues.
Be constantly on the phone with questions often.
He is also on lonsurf since sept. And now on cycle two. Labs are done frequently, cbc, camp, cea, pro time etc. Will await to see what labs GI will recommend. His cea end sept was 200, just recently it was 187. Hope this is good sign. In past the highest was 80. End of nov we have mri to see how the y90 is doing it’s work.
Good luck and keep posting your news. Just be strong, and ask ask questions and research everything.

Hi Yiiannis, I looked up the article on olive oil and it looked convincing. The problem is the olive oil must be high in oleocanthal content and that is not listed on the label. Do you know of a brand that contains it. I too have a CT at the end of November to see if the little carcinoma devils are still dead. Diane

Diane good luck to you at the end of a month. We too have a scan mri in early December to see if Y90 is working. I have been contacting the depts at Hopkins to see my husband, and finally we have gastronsurgeon meeting on Nov 15, gastroenterologist on November 23 to see why he is loosing weight due to fecal qualitative stool test being abnormal. And the surgeons group will confer with their liver doctor. I just question why oncologist does not do a total holistic approach to cancer. My family doctor did simple tests to discover this..oncologist and nurse practitioner just won’t address unless I push the,
As for olive oil, being Greek I bring in containers of Greek olive oil from my late moms farm and use it at home. Don’t know where you are but Greek olive oil pure extra virgin that peppers in the back of your mouth when you take a shot is good. I started to market my olive oil and when locals have tried it they say it is better than supermarket olive oil. But Americans use it so sparingly.
I took some to our IR doctor who is a gem and he loved it. He also makes his own sourdough bread and uses it for dipping. I told him let’s get husband on road to cure and I will have gallon jug next time I see you.
Let me know is you need anything
And keep me informed
