Insomnia, depression, anxiety

So here I am it’s 4 am I have been awake since 3 am I often wake up. I can’t go back to sleep. I can’t text my friends I could be they would ask why I was texting so early. I tried my usual sleepy time tea, Clonazepam, deep breathing etc etc and I still wake up! I remember when I was I in the hospital I would call the nurse and I would have morphine injected into my IV port and that would help me sleep. I can’t have morphine. OxyContin also made me sleepy. Can’t have that anymore I ran out. It would be so nice if I could get 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Maybe someday.

Ginger, I tried again though did check phone once but managed to leave it out of bedroom. Awoke early before 5 but I think got enough sleep. At least fewer awakenings. Will keep trying to establish this routine.

@help4meandu Good! Baby steps, and you will find later, as you look back, that you were able to successfully change your routine.

If hungry in the night air popcorn plain is good, fruit is good, raw broccoli, carrots, and celery no peanut butter. No peanuts…

Unsweetened applesauce is wonderful for middle of night hunger pangs and nausea 😵. Two or three teaspoons does it for me.

@azkidney57 I have trouble sleeping too. I generally wake up too early so give in to it and go back for a nap later in the morning. When I was on oxycodone and OxyContin they kept me totally awake!

@gingerw I too can’t quiet my mind, some nights are worse than others, depending on what is happening in my life. It’s miserable.

@rainer I do use melatonin and I think it helps. It has been approved by my transplant team. I take 3mg. I have heard that higher doses cause nightmares.

@elwooodsdad there’s number of those counting methods for falling asleep. I think the real help is that they put you on a mindless activity.

Have you tried adding 400 mg Magnesium Glycinate (most bioavailable form of Magnesium) to the Melatonin regimen? I personally know others who have found it to be beneficial. Also, often the "expectation" that you have to fall asleep may create an anxiety barrier hat works against relaxing the mins. Try just listening to the music just for the music and see what happens. Hope this helps somewhat.

@miker8888 Thanks for the tip. I will consider trying that.
I wear hearing aids so I would need to have them in to listen to music and it hurts to sleep on them.

Have you asked your doctor to put you on a low dosage of sleeping pills? I started off with Lunesta which did not work too well for me. Still had me up at 3 am. I recently changed to Ambien. IT has worked great for me. I am on a low dosage and started just a few months ago.
I also do mindfulness, stillness, box breathing, and meditation which are great resources. It's very hard to be still and turn your brain off, just for a few hours. But it is necessary. On January 19, 2022, I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. I am also a domestic violence survivor. I have anxiety, depressions, insomnia, and PTSD. I hope you can find something that will help you sleep. A goodnight's sleep helps for better production for the next day. (:

Norma, can you tell me more about the mindfulness and relaxation techniques you learned at Mayo Clinic? What program did you take?

Go to Mayo Clinic.com and search Mindfulness. It was a 3-minute practice which you can repeat as needed. There's a lot more about the topic. as well. It advises: Lie down and relax fully; breathe in on count of 1, out on 2, paying attention to movement of your abdomen; continue to 10, then repeat. Let thoughts come and go, but don't engage with them - smile as they pass by! Do this on a regular basis.

I take Ambien (low dose) and it has been a miracle for me. I was diagnosed with glioblastoma 6 years ago and suffer from depression and anxiety. I also just started this app called Aura which provides a mindfulness coach, meditations and music. It is really helping.
