Do I understand correctly that your dad has long term care insurance? If that is the case, the insurance company may be able to assist you in finding the right care for him in California.

When will he be making this move?

I'm trying to get him better insurance than what he has currently.

I understand now, @parkin41. You might consider asking friends for a referral to a good insurance broker. As others have suggested, you might also call your county's Agency for Aging for a referral.

Is your dad agreeable to moving?

I have found very valuable and timely information when using the AAA sources! An ombudsman is going to be able to help you find a good insurance broker, and offer ideas for getting your dad and mom settled in. As others have mentioned, check with your friends and acquaintances, they might give you names from their parents, also! A cross-country move can be quite intimidating for all involved, and I applaud you in taking this on.

An ombudsman is like an advocate for you and your folks. They do a lot of the research and sourcing out the best coverage for your needs. In my experience, because they have access to and knowledge of many different programs/information, they can certainly save you a lot of time when you need help!

California has a program called IHSS in home support services. He has to be on state insurance- called Medi-Cal in Ca. It is basically a program to help cover in home health and they pay minimum wage to those caregivers. Caregivers have to go to a class, pass background checks and of course you can interview them to see who might be a good fit with your dad. They do numerous things, including shopping and meals, laundry, bathing etc it is income based which is why I said they have to be on state insurance, a call to them will help to know if your father qualifies. If Google searching type in in home health and the city or county he lives in

If your dad is a veteran the VA also has a respite program that they can help with daily activities. I hope this helps.
