Iron Depletion in Blood related to COVID?

Posted by stellm @stellm, Jun 11, 2021

Has there been any reports of iron depletion in the blood after receiving the Pfizer vaccine?

@akoch

I had the Moderna and no issues beforehand. My hemoglobin read perfect piece a year before and then to below 10 and iron to below 30 after the Covid vaccine but can’t find any articles linking the two. I have been put on NIFEREX because dr thinks I gave internal bleeding. I am type 1.

@akoch- Does your doctor plan to do further testing to see where you might be bleeding?

Post Covid infection iron deficiency has been documented for some time, and may be part of the cause of some post-Covid fatigue. The frequency of post-vaccine anemia is still not really known. Some other things that can be part of iron deficiency are low thyroid and low vitamin D levels. Were these checked at the same time? After low ferritin readings, it can take some time to build up, if iron supplements don't work, sometimes infusions may be prescribed.
I hope this answers some of your questions

Thank you for the information. I had posted on 8/11 asking about severe anemia after both Pfizer shots requiring iron infusion. No Covid 19 diagnosis and have had 4 tests, none were for any symptoms of Covid. Iron retested next week snd then Dr.’s video visit to determine next steps. What information do you have about the Iron Deficiency after the vaccinations without having Covid that I could discuss with my Dr if need be? Thank You!

Hi Kathy, As much as I would like to have some "insider knowledge" about all the effects of Covid infections and the Covid vaccine, I am just another Mayo Connect member, with a lot of interest in the topic because my daughter, an ER nurse, got infected 18 months ago and is still having lingering problems.

When trying to answer questions, I search through all the available data online, including CDC, FDA, Mayo, the pharmas and other sources.

The vaccines are fairly new, so there are few published studies at this time because it takes many months to gather data, analyze it and write reports.

Since you have had this problem after both doses of their vaccine, and your doctor apparently found no other answers I suggest that your contact Pfizer directly to report the issue and ask for further guidance. That way, they will have a direct report, and be able to add your reaction to their knowledge base. This will lead to better information for you and for all of us in the future.

I have the same suspicion as Kathy that the Covid vaccine knocked my iron and hemoglobin numbers for a loop, all though not as severe as I have been reading what has happened to others. I can’t find any studies on the topic. I have not had Covid and my dr has put me on ferex.

Here is the site for Pfizer Vaccine Event reporting:
https://www.pfizersafetyreporting.com/#/en
Or you can call: (800) 438-1985.
Others have reported that reporting directly may result in a call back from Pfizer to follow up, depending on the issue.
I hope this helps. I would love to hear your experience when you make the report.

I also donate blood regularly for years and never had low iron count for any screening. However, the last two donation attempts after receiving the Pfizer vaccine, my iron was too low to donate and I was turned away. The first time I was deferred, I was a bit shocked. And today, when I was deferred again, it made me thing think that the vaccine could have been the issue.

I usually do a lot of physical works very healthy lifestyle. I never had any low iron issues in my life. I don’t drink and smoke and love red meat, and I am 41 years old.
I had my first Pfizer in Feb 2021.
Felt a bit tired, a lot easier compared to the past in March and April 2021.
Had my second Pfizer vaccine at the beginning of May.
The situation was getting worse. I started to cough at the beginning of July. Saw the doctor a few times could find any problems.
Middle August 2021. I started feeling extremely weak. I couldn’t work even walk up to the first floor from the ground floor without stopping and had a rest. My heart was pumping like mad. Therefore I went to the A and E departments. They did all sorts of tests and found my haemoglobin level was only 56 (the average level should be 130-165). They gave me two units of blood transfusion immediately (950ml of blood). And brought the Haemoglobin level to 81, it was still low, but I felt much better immediately. And my cough was gone. The doctor explained because my heart was pumping so hard for such a long time. That’s was the reason for the cough.
They didn’t find internal bleeding or any other issues, and no one could explain why my haemoglobin level was that low. I left The hospital Without any Prescription.

The Pfizer vaccine can cause iron depletion. With that in mind, if you are feeling tired after Vaccine. Highly recommend checking the iron and haemoglobin level. If you have any heart conditions and you do nothing, it can be life-threatening.

@trieste - Except for Astra Zeneca I still can't find anything definitive about a lower blood count after you were vaccinated with Moderna. I'm curious to know why you had your blood tested and also how much of a difference was there? Did your white blood cell count should have increased.

You might want to consider what people are saying, and don’t only rely on VAERS. We are not crazy. Yes, I do to have below range levels of hemoglobin after second dose of Pfizer. Came to the ER to check my shortness of breath by the way, 10 days post second shot. Again: we the people should be taken seriously. We went out on a limb, took the vaccine, it would be nice to have some support from the medical community now, not just “oh, it’s coincidence”. Thank you
