Got Pfizer Feb- SIRVA next day -concerned that vaccine did not take

Posted by katherine345 @katherine345, Jun 10, 2021

Associate attending Physician at a major NY hospital who writes for 150 newspapers in March wrote " Though it is possible the cell around the bursa could express some COVID-19 protein, I recommend that a person who developed SIVA after COVID-19 vaccination restart the 2-dose vaccine series." I have SIRVA (frozen shoulder -diagnosed-Adhesive capsulitis of left shoulder<br I have had consistent pain since the day after my 1st Pfizer -got the second dose. I has been 3 months since my vaccine. My doctor disregarded the NY dr.'s statement saying I should be careful and wait for the booster shots. Dr Fauci states that 1 Pfizer is only 33% effective against the new variants. I work with people who arrive from foreign countries - teaching adults. I'm in my 60s & must return to work in August. I got an anti body test on my own which suggest I may have some vaccine in my system, but the independent lab states that these tests are not proven and can't determine immunity. I don't know any Doctors who have information on this issue. I live in CA. Is there any medical group who can speak to this issue? Is it safe to get a 3rd Pfizer vaccine (3 months after the 1st & 2nd dose) because it's likely the first dose didn't take? Thank you, katherine345

I had the antibody test at the Mayo Clinic last week and happy to report I scored over 500 with a Positive! So even with SIRVA, I am fully vaccinated!

May I ask which Mayo Clinic & which Doctor ordered the test? I finally got a response from an Infectious Disease Dr. in LA and he said a test for "neutralizing antibody levels" would be helpful, but are not commercially available and I should contact the CDC & Pfizer for advice. I emailed both this am, but doubt they'll be able to lead me to a test if they reply. I will make a video appt. w/ a Mayo doctor, but need to know which one is likely to be informed on SIRVA issues. Thank you so much for sharing information.

I am a patient at the Jacksonville Florida Mayo Clinic with stage IV cancer. My Oncologist ordered the antibody test for me when I told her about the SIRVA incident. I do not think she knew much about SIRVA but just wanted to make sure I had enough antibodies from the vaccine. Which vaccine did you receive?

I’m sorry that you have to deal with cancer. I had the Pfizer in late February which caused the SIRVA, thinking I was just having a lengthy side effect I had the 2nd in March before seeing Dr. Roach’s “To Your Health“ article. Unfortunately, Dr. R. Will not see new patients via video, he’s in NY, I’m in LA.
Thank you for sharing info. I hope your health returns. Sincerely, Katherine

I got Moderna vaccine, mild pain after 1st shot, evolving to more pain and partial immobility of left arm. After 4 months of pain and not enough information, went to the doctor and was diagnosed with frozen shoulder. Took the steroid injection, but still no improvement after 2 weeks. I am very worried about deciding to take a booster shot, and which arm, since I don't want to compromise my right arm too. I don't know if I'm allegic to polyethylene glycol [PEG]. Should I take the JJ booster, instead?

Hello @silvio and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am sorry to hear about your experience and I can completely understand your hesitation and anxiety with getting the next vaccine.

I found an article that may be of interest to you as you determine what is right for you and also recap your experience with the first vaccine.

Does any of that article ring true for you when you received your first vaccine?

Hi @silvio, Have you tried physical therapy for the shoulder? I went on Youtube.com and typed in Frozen Shoulder exercises and did those. It really was hard but it worked and I have full use of my shoulder. Best of luck getting that shoulder back!

Hi @seaspray , how long took you to fully recover, with those exercises? Did you also take a steroid injection?

REPLY

Hi @silvio! No, I did not take the injection as I wanted to try therapy first. It took about 10 days but I remember by day 3 I could get a sweat shirt on. This was back in March when it was cold outside and I could not get my arm through long sleeves!!! Once you get that shoulder loosen you will be on your way. Hang in there, I know it hurts.

I got the first Pfizer vaccine shot on 18th february and 24 hours after that I had pain all over my arm, it got better after a week but the pain didn't disappear completely . I got the second shot but it was given on the other arm, since my other arm was still painful. I thought it was going to disappear with time but I began having more pain while making some movements with my arm instead. I still have pain today, 30th august. I've taken anti-inflamatory tablets for about 15 days ( 5+ 10) and I've been doing physiotherapy ( 20 sessions till now), but I still have pain and difficulty with some movements. My arm did´t go back to normal. Ultrassonographies showed inflamation in several tendons and thicknening of the subcromial bursa. Nothing seems to work. I have never had any problems like these before being vaccinated with COMINARTY. I still don't know if my pain was caused by the substance or by the fact that the shot was given too high.
