Post COVID-19 impact on metabolism and weight loss

Posted by bsd @bdelsignore, Jul 26, 2021

I am a 61 year old women who had a moderate case of COVID and pneumonia in December 2020. Previously I was on a low carb high protein weight-loss diet with moderate exercise and strength training. I lost 15 pounds June 2020 - December 2020. After COVID I have not been able to lose additional weight despite the same weight-loss and exercise regimen. After 8 months, I am still at my pre-COVID weight. Could COVID have negatively impacted my metabolism making it more difficult to lose weight?

Hi @bdelsignore, welcome. I haven't heard about COVID infection affecting metabolism. However, a Google search revealed that there may be a link between metabolic syndrome and higher risk of infection and more severe complications.
In this study COVID-19 and metabolic syndrome: could diet be the key? https://ebm.bmj.com/content/26/1/1, researchers state:
"Two-thirds of people in the UK who have fallen seriously ill with COVID-19 were overweight or obese and 99% of deaths in Italy have been in patients with pre-existing conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. These conditions, collectively known as metabolic syndrome, are linked to impaired immune function, and more severe symptoms and complications from COVID-19."

bsd, did you have metabolic syndrome before? Is it possible that you have hit a temporary plateau in your diet and weight loss regimen?

Post viral syndromes have been shown to affect thyroid function. I would have your thyroid checked and make sure it's the FULL panel, not just T4. There are also lots of vitamins and supplements that support thyroid function. Vitamin K2, selenium off the top of my head. I would consult a nutritionist to get to the bottom of whatever is going on.

Thank you for your response. No, I did not have metabolic syndrome prior to COVID infection. I had no other pre-existing conditions. I had wondered if I had hit a temporary plateau; however, 8 months is a long time to not see any movement in weight. I will check with the Low Carb, Healthy Fat group.

Thank you - I will check with my dr. to have a full panel thyroid check.

Most MD's won't do the full panel, due to insurance companies being in charge of the standard of care. My doctor actually told me to go to a nutritionist when I went low carb. I find that MDS are there when you have a serious health problem but to optimize my health, the nutritionist was much more helpful. Also, congrats on being proactive with your health! I know it's hard and can be very frustrating to plateau, especially for so long! A viral infection can just throw so many different things out of whack, it takes time to get back on track. Good luck to you!

Have your doctors told you about things you can do to help the swelling like elevating your legs, reducing salt in your diet?

Amy-Have you tried Mrs. Dash? When my husband was told to drastically reduce his salt intake we tried this. No, it's not the same but it is good. Keep your legs up when you can and drink water, even if you have no appetite!

What you describe sounds exactly like my experience- except in addition to newly gained weight not budging, my muscles got fatigued from the smallest amount of exercise. Just walking my dog made my thighs ache! I’m certain it’s a result of either the virus or the vaccine.
