TMAO Blood Test for CVD Risk

Posted by tim1028 @tim1028, Jul 19, 2021

I just got a TMAO (TRIMETHYLAMINE N OXIDE) blood test drawn (no results yet) to determine heart attack and stroke risk. This is a relatively new test, but cardiologist experts say it helps to know. If it's high (diet high in red meat and saturated fat) changing to a plant-based diet may reduce it.

@tim1028, Thanks for starting this discussion to raise awareness. I had never heard of it so had to do a little searching and found this article by the Cleveland Heart Lab -- TMAO Testing: A New Way To Assess Heart Attack And Stroke Risk: https://www.clevelandheartlab.com/blog/horizons-tmao-testing-a-new-way-to-assess-heart-attack-and-stroke-risk/

Can you give us an update after you get the results back?

TMAO looks like a promising test to assess cardiac risk. I'll be sure to update when I get results.

I got the TMAO test results back. Result = 9.4 (Moderate increase 2X in risk for cardiac event) Normal (low risk) = <6.2. High risk = >9.9.
