7% saline continues to deliver.

Posted by thumperguy @thumperguy, Jun 25, 2021

Here I am, again singing the praises of 7% saline solution, the introduction of which into my daily lung treatment, correlates convincingly with the disappearance of predictable twice yearly episodes of acute (febrile) bronchitis requiring antibiotic treatment; nineteen months now without a flare up. My apologies to any English teachers on the forum; can’t seem to learn when to end a sentence. Don

I see there are some older conversations here about glutathione, which I should have read before posting this question. However, I’m still interesting in any other comments/suggestions if there are any out there.
Thanks,

Has anyone tried nebulizing with glutathione? In addition to saline? My naturopath recommended it to me. My respirologist would not comment on it but said to continue nebulizing with 7% twice a day if I decide to try it.
Does anyone have any experience with this and, if so, was it helpful?

Hi Kathy, yes it has been discussed quite a bit, along with the supplement n-acetylcystine (NAC) which is similar. Both are believed to improve lung function.

These are classified as supplements, which in the US means they are unregulated, and inspection/certification by an outside agency is voluntary. That means when you buy it, you may or may not be getting what is on the label, in both potency and purity. In fact, random testing has shown that some products may not even contain any of what is on the label. All of this makes me extremely reluctant to inhale any supplement into my already fragile, damaged lungs.

However, I do use supplements orally, including NAC. I trust my gut, literally, to protect me from any impurities. In addition, I buy independently tested supplements from well-rated companies, never just the "cheapest". With the proliferation of sellers on the Internet, there are many fly-by-night sellers, whose products are untested and unregulated.

The bottom line - my shortness of breath seems improved after several months using NAC, 600mg/day, as a supplement. In particular, I no longer have spells of what the old General Practitioners used to call "air hunger" - times when I alternately sigh and try to inhale deeply to get a deep breath - which used to occur almost every evening.

My pulmonologist and PCP are adamant that no substance beyond prescribed medications and saline, should EVER be nebulized or otherwise inhaled, and I trust their judgement.

I always appreciate your opinion and I’ve been reluctant to try it for the same reasons (supplements are not regulated in canada either). My fear is always making things worse. I already use NAC and it has perhaps helped get me this far. I will also check into glutathione oral supplements as that seems to be less risky than nebulizer.
Thanks for your comments, as usual.

@kathyhg Hi, I nebulize with Glutathione every evening from Theranaturals. Very cost effective as far as Glutathione is concerned. This to was recommended by my GP. Hope this helps! Glenda

@kathyhg I nebulize with glutathione every other day in addition to my saline that I use every day. I mix it in with my saline. It's expensive unless you get the kind in the capsules that you have to mix so that's why I use it every other day. The capsules are alot cheaper but I'm using the liquid glutathione. I doubt a pulmonologist will give it to you because I asked mine a couple of years ago and he made a snarky comment about it ( because it's only in the alternative/integrative world right now) so I went to a functional medicine doctor who got me the glutathione. I first read about it years ago in David Pecaut's book, Beating Bronchiectasis. He used the capsule form and mixed it in saline. There's someone else on this site that uses the capsule form and knows the website that has it but I can't remember the name at the moment. Nan

Glutathione and NAC are closely related, and I cannot find any definitive information, but would conclude from my reading that use of both is unnecessary as NAC converts to glutathione in the liver as it is digested.
I did find a couple of cautions stating that use can lead to elevated magnesium levels, low blood pressure, decreased clotting after surgery, altered effectiveness of diabetes and heart meds.

I've ONLY nebulized with glutathione along with the 7% saline. Great combo. I went off drugs 3 years ago when had nightly sweats, frequent shortness of breath, already thin had lost lots weight & a pulmonologist told me, bless him: "UNFORTUNATELY, all WE have for you at this juncture is 'the cocktail'" that is the 3 antibiotics at once remedy - for 18-24 months. & was clear that the MAC & bronchiectasis issues might not be erased or if they were could return within months. & I thought: all that & the probability of some side effects which would then have me dependent on more specialists & pharma concoctions. Just wasn't my church. So I left. Blessings all dealing with these conditions!
